View Full Version : Size of oil cooler fittings at filter housing?

I've noticed that I've still got a persistent oil leak, even after replacing most of the gaskets I could get to. The oil is accumulating on the front crossmember and then dripping on to the garage floor. After the car sits overnight, I've got about a 6-inch round puddle present on the floor, so it's fairly significant.

I think I can see some evidence that it may be running down from the lower fitting for the oil cooler lines, where it threads into the oil filter housing. I did NOT re-seal these fittings when I had everything apart.

I would like to attempt removal of these fittings with the oil filter housing still mounted, since I really don't feel like removing the lower radiator hose. Does anyone know what size these fittings are? I'm referring to the black-colored fittings that are threaded right into the aluminum housing. It looks like 1-1/8" is close in SAE but I'm sure it's a metric size... probably 27-28mm or so... I just want to be sure I'm buying the correct socket.

Thanks!
Andrew

I gave it a try for ya ;)

A 1-1/8 is 28.58 mm and I think a bit too big. My 1-1/16 socket is a bit small. My 27 mm open end is just a bit small. My 30 mm open end is too big (bigger than my 27 mm is small) so I would say 28mm is closest. If you are going to use a socket, make sure you get a DEEP socket or it will not engage the hex. It is 1.120 in :D

Roger that - Thanks!!:saluting:

Andrew if I remember I needed three wrenches 1 1/4. 1 1/8 and 1 inch. Its the only reason why I have wrenches this size in the garage (for the oil cooler lines). I think I only needed to use the first two:cheers:

Be careful tightening. Big wrench, aluminum housing, tapered threads can result in cracked housing if over-tightened.

Solid advice Jerry

Thanks guys.... turns out I couldn't find a 28mm socket so I guess I'll go buy the 1-1/8" box-end wrench.

Ebay or you local Sears have them

Yeah, I think the wrench is impossible to use when installed in the car. there's not enough clearance from the boss for the pressure sensor. I'll go with the 1-1/8" deep socket instead.

Thanks guys!

Andrew, didn't you have that ''special'' 1- 1/8" socket for the replacing of the pressure sensor? Won't that work on the fittings for the oil cooler lines??????

Hmm, I replaced the pressure sensor on my red ZR-1, but didn't use a special socket - I think I just used a wrench, but it was almost 2 years ago so it's tough to recall.

i found it easier to take the pressure sensor off the car if i removed the oil filter . i used a 11/8 bow end wrench to loosen it about 11/2 turns the screwed it out the rest of the way by hand
