View Full Version : Taking my Z to the 1/8 mile track on Wednesday

I know the Z is more geared for the 1/4 mile but I am also taking my '64 Nova as well so its going to be a day full of flogging!
I took the Nova to the track a couple weeks ago and ran a 6.80 at 101mph. That was also with slicks and a 1.499 '60 foot
What should i expect with the Z? She has stock tires and 4.30 gears so I will be more curious with the MPH to get a true indicator of how the car is running.
Those of you with timeslips, did your 1/8 and 1/4 mile times match to sites such as these: http://www.fl-thirdgen.org/quartermileconversion.html
What do you all think it will run:
-92 Z with 88k miles
-K&N with cutout lid
-Jeal headers
-Stock exhaust with X-pipe and Dynomax mufflers
-4.30 gears
-Corey Henderson tuned chip

9.4-9.7 @ 83-86MPH maybe
9.4-9.7 @ 83-86MPH maybe
Lee, i think he should go a bit faster.
If you can get/stay under 2.0 60ft
I would guess around 8.5 at about 90 +- depending on his driving.
The chart you posted is on the money i ran
1/8 7.1 @ 100
1/4 11.09 @ 129

i would guess around 8.5-9.0 at 86-88 mph . your going to have to be really care full off the line .also you might try short shifting the 1-2 shift to limit wheel spin .

Probably right time is will be 8.4-8.7...altough MPH might still be in the 85-87 range....will be interested to see, your car makes good power with the mods

I will have to go find the slip for my et. My mph however was 89.45. Ported intake/ inj.hs and flowmaster catback. 355 rwhp at the time. I will predict 8.2@90.6.
good luck.

remember he hasnt had any porting done to her . with 430s on street tires launching is going to be a peddle fest at best doesnt anyone have a set of drag radials they can loan you for a night . even 275x40x17s would work decent .bottem line have a ton of fun trying her out .;)

Yes this is what i am looking for honestly. If my mph is 89 or greater then i will be happy. The car already weighs 3600 and my tubby a$$ weighs around 240 so the car will be h e a v y.
His sig says 375rwhp
Tires/gears is the reason i say if he could keep it under 2.0 60ft

i didnt see the 375. old guy i guess . if the da is less than 500 he might hit 89-90 but the unknown is 430s and street tires . going to need a very slow soft foot grasshopper . and maybe short shifting into second to avoid big wheel spin there .. if youi get et streets make sure you ck the ujoints before you go .if there are any zerks on the half shaft ujoints replace them before you go. breaking a 1/2 shaft u joint can be very distructive to ones wallet

OK I may be ignorant here asking but why would this make a difference? These were bad from the factory or what?

I'm the same way which is why I can't remember my et. Just don't care that much about it. With that being said your making 20rwhp more than I was. You only weigh 20 lbs more and have 430s. I think your et is the crapshoot. Your mph has to be 90mph or better.

Going against the rules here  And I'm going to post a actual 1/8 mile time slip from my stock ZR1. For me it's simple dyno your car let the car speak for itself and backup the dyno slip. I'm 156 and in the other lane 108 was gm's infamous blazer ss (don't know all about it but in the staging lanes the owner said something about high 11's) anyway results may vary! If it to small I'll fix later but it goes 60' 1.88 et 7.8 and 90.21 mph through stock mufflers owned the car since it was new.

Wow a 7.8 converts to a low 12 in the 1/4 mile. I thought stock Z's ran low 13's to high 12's in stock trim? How'd you get 1.88 60 foots? Did you use drag radials?
Impressive time!!!!!!

thats impressive , the one thing about infineon is that the da is usually negitive which makes a big difference .plus their track prep is legendary.. a more standard et coming from both my cars that at the time had the same mods as you would be in the 8.2 range at about 88.5-89 mph . as pete will tell you our cars mile an hr goes up the better they hook .the da when i ran those times was 2500-3000 ft. i say again though the real hard thing for you will be to get the car to launch on street tires with your gears . any way it goes .HAVE A GREAT TIME;)

I'm too scared to launch the car at 4K rpm so maybe I'll stick around the 2500 rpm mark.
Anyway, I'm off to Discount Tire to get these bad boys mounted.
Stay tuned...

i have used these in the past . you will have to do a good 4-5 second burn out before your first pass to get them to hook . i tried all sorts of tire pressures . when i went to 15lbs the felt real squirrily at the top end . since you are only going to the 1/8 mile you might get away with it . i stay around 17-19 lbs and tried to launch around 2000 rpms and roll my foot into the throttle so i was floored in about 10 ft from the starting line .if i got more agressive they just blew the tires off the car. hope this gives you a little guideline info on these tires and car . good luck and have a great time .

I'm also running the same MT DRs for strip use. They hook up great when heated up with a good burn-out and the pressure down around 16-17 psi. With your 4.30 gears you should see some decent 60ft times, 1.85-1.90 sec launching at 3k if the track is hooking.

Petepete , if i were you i would really look into that new nitto nto5r drag radial . they are to me way better than the mickeys . my 60fts got at least a tenth better than when i was using thew mickeys .and you dont have to fry the heck out of them to get them to bite .lastly you can get 2 of them for about 380 plus tax .jmho

Another update...Although the forecast doesn't call for rain today, the sky looks very cloudy and it is extremely windy. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the track does open up. I got a new sticker made up for my Nova so it would be a shame to not take the cars out there tonight:

Ok headed home. Great night. The Nova ran a 6.7@102. The Z also ran incredibly!!! It went 7.95 @ 89.7mph! The sixty foot was a 1.83. Perhaps the most amazing thing of all was that my Z did a baby wheelie :-) After a big smokie burnout, and a 4500rpm launch, the driver side tire lifted off about 2 inches from the ground! Yes I have this recorded on video as well and I will post it later this evening!

Thanks for the kind words  As promised, here is the video. I lined up against a pretty quick C3 Corvette who was running 7.20's all night long. I'm glad I lost to a fellow brother and not someone from the Ford camp! There were also several new GT Mustangs and Camaros running mid 8's.
When I finished the run, several people came over to look at the car and ask what i had. When they saw the ZR-1 badges, they all began to get excited. One guy knew alot about these cars and asked if I was willing to sell it lol.
I definitely need to work on my launch technique. If I can pull a 1.60 or 1.70 sixty foot, I might be able to get the car into the veeeery low 12's. I am salivating at the thought of a lightweight flywheel, ported IH and some skinny front tires!!!

Your comment is right on the money! Glad you caught that. The car did indeed bog so my guess is that with a 5K launch, maybe I could do better but I was too chicken!

Great run and good driving!
MT DRs do the job when the conditions are right.
From my personal C4 drag strip experience you may want to have a rear spindle and bearing setup handy (or buddy with a trailer) if you launch any harder. With some help you can R&R a busted spindle at the track in about an hour.

boy sure must be nice to do a burnout past the starting line ,if we do that where we race they get really pissed . what tire pressures did you try .also you can knock a tenth off your 60fts by pulling the upright connection to your front sway bar . also it helps a bunch if you move you mat sensor to the underside of the front bumper . as it gets heat soaked in the stk position waiting to run in the staging lanes and pulls a ton of timing out . you have me thinking of getting some 430s and ditching the 392s in my 92.nice air by the way
Most tracks consider burnouts passed the line a "faux pas", unless you are a dragster/funny car type.
Those dry hops made me nervous, I avoid them.
Nice runs.

Great advice! Where do i get a rear spindle and bearing setup and how much do they cost? Whats involved to put it in? What are the symptoms of a broken spindle?
Sorry for all the questions

Don't worry, when a spindle goes you will definitely know something in the drive train bit the big one. Spindles usually break at launch and thats as far as your race will go. Shut it down immediately in order to minimize the collateral damage of the halfshaft rattling around in the suspension knuckle unsupported.
Corvette Recycling has good prices for rear spindles and OEM NOS bearing hubs:

When the spindle pops it most always takes out the wheel speed sensor:

...and scares the brake rotor:

yeah been on the wrong side of that one turned the spindle into a barbers pole and the 1/2 shaft in to a twisted piece of metal . what i did was get the nitrus ready 1/2 shafts froms dennys drive shaft, then has summers bros make new spindles and bearing surfaces. increased splines and better material . the cost for that was 1300. but they are about as solid as i am going to get without going to a boltin ford 9 in . which is about 5k.. just ask corey about what breaks (hes broken it all ) and what he would do and follow his suggestions .and like the above said take extra parts or trailer the car to the track

Tires were at 20psi. I definitely plan to take her to the 1/4 mile later in the spring. The car just felt so damn good after I left Corey's that I couldn't wait and took it to the 1/8 mile track. I also needed to learn the best launch technique for the car. I tell ya what, this was my first time back at the track in over 10 years. Felt great and it was very addicting. Man I love my car! :D

The best 60ft i have done was 1.69 with the 4.10's.
I thought the 4.10's would get me into the 10's but the extra shift does not help.
Nothing to beef up on the rear end, some have tried billet and cryod spindles still broke i just have extra parts, just make sure you use the solid Spicer u-joints with no grease fittings.

be kinda tough to use a line lock to launch with a manual trans. some use a line lock for doing burnouts so they dont burn up their rear brakes

I ran at Kennedale about 10 years ago and loved the track. Great launch with lots of very good rubber laid down. I did try a couple of 5k launches and my best was 1.59. I was there to race a friend's ZR-1 but unfortunately, his first pass fried his clutch. I cannot remember what times I was turning. Just remember how great the traction was. And this was in the daytime in summer. That mini wheelie was great. I loved it.
