Hey Frank, I was going to get rid of the boat anchor, but that would mean the old goat would have to go. She underwent a frame off about 8 years ago, but I am thinking about replacing the saab midnight blue with quicksilver, and racing stripes. The wheels will be gone, and ccw's will take their place.

Zrmax, I will post everything up stage by stage as it happens. It may take a bit longer because of my schedule, but I am still shooting to make a bg appearance in her this year!

Only got about an hour into it today. Keith came by to visit, and I didn't bring my sawzall.

Front end is disassembled, motor mounts undone, trans undone, driveshaft out, radiator disconnected, wiring undone, exhaust dropped.

Thank you, I have a serious love fest with this car. My wife absolutely, positively cannot stand it. She thinks it is the ugliest thing ever made. I have no idea why I like it so much, but it is the one classic car I have that I drive whenever possible. Once the transformation is complete this is going to be my coast to coast car again, replacing what the zr-1 was for me last year.

Looks like the brakes will now be taken care of as well. Move it is going to put together a kit for me, and send the dimensions to ccw once it is designed to ensure there is no fitment issue. Sounds like a great company to me :thumbsup:

I am replacing the monster power booster with a 8" one to create more room. once I decided what I am going to do with the cross-member I am going to cut the tunnel out, and start fabricating a new one for the car using the piece I got from xfire as a starting point. I have come up with a couple really different plans for pipe routing, and custom pieces on this build once it begins to progress. I'm pretty excited about this one!

No photos today. I went to the shop but I spent more time on the phone than wrenching :blahblah::blahblah:

I ground the sbc mounts off the subframe, I am just going to start fresh.

I removed the pan from the engine, to modify it. The gods must have been smiling on me because I found a bunch more sections of broken rollers in the pickup. This cause me to start pulling the bearings, I am going to mic them all and check for wear :censored:. I decided to modify the pan instead of the cross member. I really want to drive the wheels off of this car, and would rather leave the support and strength in it that has already survived 40 years.

I marked out how much I need to cut from the tunnel, and it is a whopper for sure. It is amazing how bif this engine is when you put it next to a regular 350 sbc.

I removed the power booster and steering rod. I need to go with a link system for the rod as the way it sits now will interfere with the head.

SW headers will not work as is. I am either going to cut and box the subframe, or just modify the headers to work. I most likely will modify the headers as it is the lesser of two evils, imho.

Tomorrow I plan to cut the tunnel out, and make myself a template out of light gauge aluminum.

One of the local shops here offered to sell me an entire c5 dash, center console, hvac system, wiring harness, basically everything I want out of the vete interior for 1,000. I am now considering installing this in the gto, but am torn as I kind of like the old school styling compare with todays plastics.

yeah, but that is for a narrow lil lsx engine, and small t-56 trans. Not much of it pertains to what I am doing. The lsx is done to death. The lt5 is more to my liking, and it will be a one of a kind. I don't need a flashy car, but I like for them to be different from the pack :handshak:Refer back to post 5.

Hate to tell you but you're going to end up with both. With a nice set of wheels and tires (ideally refinished OE deep dish 5 spoke Pontiac wheels on the back and the standard OE 5 spokes on the front with new beauty rims and lugs) and the Midnight Blue paint with the White interior it is already screaming "look at me". When pretty much anyone hears that LT-5 coming, they're going to look around and see's that painted bumper and hood scopes, and they're gonna think "30 year old muscle car" and their reaction is going to be "WTF does he have in that thing".

Face it, you're screwed. It's a one of a kind, different from anything anyone else has built or seen, and flashy.

I'm building my own harness, and standalone ecu.

Sounds like a neat project. The tunnel on my gto was too small for the 6-speed (zf or t-56), but I am cutting it and making a new tunnel. The t-56 is an option for you as far as manuals go, if you have your mind set on it, as it is considerably smaller than the zf.

I'll try to help you the best I can with any questions, feel free to pm me.

Ok, to the update of the project. I forgot my camera again today, but will update photos when I get back next week from Maryland again.

Tunnel is cut out, and new one fabbed, waiting to be welded in

Custom motor mount brackets made

Custom trans mount made, pinion set.

Crank locator tooth welded on the reluctor wheel

oil pan is modified for crossmember

My damn diff is open, so I am going to need to install a lsd.

I still need to make a removable console, and have it covered with leather.

Someone has generously donated a engine wiring harness to help me fab what I need.

I have purchased a painless wiring kit to update the wiring in the gto, still has not arrived

My vintage air system still has not arrived

I have decided agains a modern gto dash, I just love the simplicity of the old interior, and I already have electronic gauges installed in the stock clutster

I need to get on assembling the engine, and locating some trans to bellhousing bolts. At this point I think I am just going to bead blast everything and paint it black. i do not have time to fab everything up the way I want it and have it black chromed. Paint will have to work for awhile.

I need to either modify the crossmember, i.e. box the uppers, or modify the sw headers. I think I am going to modify the headers instead of the crossmember.the first two runners of each side interfere with the crossmember.

Cool to see those parts are going to get used instead of sit on my shelf as garage art. The spacers should be replicated in aluminum or you can modify the dropped plenum to make it fit over the breather tubes the same way Kurt White has done.

Not sure about epic, but it will definately be unique. The closer it gets, and it still has a long way to go, the more excited I get.

I am going to let a body shop do some touchup on the paint and realign all the front body panels when all the mechanicals are done. There is a local shop that does nothing but old a bodies, and I am sure they will do a much better job than I.

I was thinking black chrome for the engine, but the closer it gets the more I am leaning towards painting the engine to match the car. What do you guys think?

'That will be next winters project Frank. I want to collect real data from this project in regards to cylinder by cylinder tuning, air flow properties of the plenum, temperature, methanol injection benefits, and maximum output in regards to a stock engine with an aftermarket standalone.

Once I collect all the data above it is my intention to take this thing to the jagged edge, wasting this engine in the process (I am going to start looking for a spare once this project is together). I'm just going to enjoy it through the spring, summer, and fall, and take her back down next winter.

When I build the new motor I am going to do it stock displacement, close the deck, lower the compression and utilize multi layer steel headgaskets for the fi application. I am also going to re-engineer the crankcase ventilation system as well.

I already have the turbochargers, and will be using twin garrett gt382R snails for it. I am also going to switch the tb to a single blade unit, machine some cam caps, shave the cam cover caps so I can have mulitple generic cam cover sets without having to line bore them. It's one part of the motor design that I really do not care for.

About the fellowship, I am happy that has been your experience. I have been the recipient of some prety nasty pm's, and had some go so far as to tell me to leave as I have nothing to offer the board, or anyone for that matter. My personality style is just not well received by many. I have no issue speaking my mind, and saying how I feel. That is considered being an *** anymore, and people get their feelings hurt easily. Another day down, and slow progress.

Putting the supra independent rear in this changed the trans angle, so first was removing the tunnel, and setting the trans correctly;

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a260/chaosrob/gto9.jpg

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a260/chaosrob/gto8.jpg

This has created a couple more issues, namely with the slave cylinder, that I have to deal with. I have decided that now with the modded pan, and crossmember, as well as this new height for the trans I am welding in a steel tunnel. I no longer will require a two piece for engine removal, so I am going back solid.

The engine sits much better in here now as well, as seen in the pictures. I also removed the drivers side fender to assist in the header alterations for this side, and pulled the brake booster/master for the new setup;

Supra rear being placed for initial fitment;

Oop's, gas tank has to come out as well;

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a260/chaosrob/gto3.jpg

Holy hell, look at that. It is almost a perfect fit. I need only make minor adjustments to the cross brace (already started), weld in two square bars, make forawrd mount plates, and possibly relocate rear sway bar and decide which coilovers to use and make upper mounts for them;

This thing is tits! huge rear disk brakes, great wheel options )I have about 20 sets of wheels for supras, and should promote great handling for the old girl. All in all I am extremely happy right now.

Will finish welding in on Tuesday, and finish the header modifications on Wednesday. Thursday will bring the adaption of the 62 wheel on the balancer, and the start of wiring.

2 weeks baby, and this thing will start, and run!

Thanks Pete. If I could quit changing my mind and redoing things already done I would be in a much better place right now lol.

This is my LAST car build. I will tweak her on occasion in the future, but after this one I am done. I want her to be special, and as a result keep changing my mind on some things.

As you know I am selling all but about 4 of my cars. I am trying to get it back to a manageable number so I can keep up with them. I will still do my own work on my cars, but no more builds, at least that is my intent lol

It wont be nice enough for that Dom, but thank you.

The car really needs another frame off, and I just don't have it in me to do that right now. It has been a definate blast to work on though, far different from the wrenching I have done the past couple of years. I used to do some really bizzare builds for people, and myself, but it has been pretty tame cookie cutter stuff for the past couple years, until this. Always nice to stretch yourself a bit.

Life happens. I had some things on the family fron, and work that have slowed me a bit. I will have everything mechanical for the transplant done by tomorrow, but I am a little behind where I wanted to be.

Since there really is no trigger wheel application, had a buddy laser cut a 60-2 tooth wheel. The inside portion was left attached with little tabs for perfect center alignment utilizing the balancer "snout".

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a260/chaosrob/ati3.jpg

You can see here once mounted that the inside section was snapped off, leaving a wonderful fitting piece

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a260/chaosrob/ati1photo.jpg

Here is the front that shows the overall diameter in relation to that of the dampner.

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a260/chaosrob/ati2.jpg

For shits and giggles, here is the forward mounting bracket that was fabbed for the supra independent rear suspension install. It looks like it grew out of the frame . Overall I am very happy with this. the entire sub-frame fit perfectly between the rails. I have ordered my coilover setup for the rear as well, and will use spacing rods to roll it around until they come in

So is the trigger wheel going to be used to fire LSx coils?

Rob,

So is the trigger wheel going to be used to fire LSx coils?

I guess in the most simple terms, yes. Using this formula you could say I am using the cam position sensor to run the timed, or if you rather, sequential fueling.

AS I replied in one of the original posts in the lt5 ignition thread, one could do this in a fashion where the stock ecu did not even realize it was running the engine any longer IF they wanted to do a standalone system.

Strike one, two and three.

I do not understand people who are selling something, yet cannot either give you a picture, or even a description with them putting their hands on it. Good condition means many things to many different people.

This fender may cause a major issue with completing the car. i simply refuse to purchase a 40 year old used part without seeing it first, or getting a very good description of it :(

Yeah, I searched around craigslist, came up with nothing. At this point I am about ready to just weld another patch panel on the one I have, as distateful as it is to me.

I am not sure that the place in the chicago area (the parts place) would even show the fender to someone. They seem to have no interest in helping at all.

I appreciate it Jeff, but I kept hitting it until I found what I needed. I picked up two 72 fenders, the only difference being the ducts which I like anyway, and was lucky enough to find them local.

They will both take some work, and a little patching, but the support is still solid, and they have their unwarped form.

Thanks for the help.

Went to the shop today to clean since I didn't have much time, and wound up playing with a couple wheel options instead. If I do not clean this place soon I am not going to be able to find the car.
