Should be advice in title....ooops
Well I am somewhat of an impasse with the seller of the Callaway....he wants me to send him the money....no title sent to me, nothing. I know he is concerned over scams...but I am not too confident in sending his $$$$$$ without some exchange is a good idea. To me the paper title is not much to ask for in exchange for a draft from my bank.....he still has the car.
Any suggestions...was thinking of using escrow.com.

He wants your money and won't give up the title. Caveat Emptor.

Lee,
If he's legit, he should have no problem with dealing through a third party, like escrow.com. If he has a problem, I would seriously question whether HE is legit. My .02 cents.

Do you know anyone local that you trust who can handle the transaction for you? The other thing you can do is depost money directly into his (local) bank account with his account # and zip code. That way, there's a strong paper trail should things go south.

Well the check is coming from CU to his CU .....not worried about papertrial(its there), just the hassle if he does not release the car. One option is to send it USPS, and then if becomes a federal offense if screws me over. I know he has lived there for some time, but I just don't know him so its a gamble.

Lee:
I'm sure any one of us here on the Registry would be glad to help you out with this deal.
Pick out someone who's within say 3 or 4 hours driving distance from the seller and PM them, see if they wouldn't mind driving to the seller and closing the deal as your proxy.
Most of us here are reasonably trustworthy on days that end with letter "Y".
So your deal is likely, maybe, pretty much, safe.
Maybe.
Kinda.
Well, you know.

Are you sure the title is clear? You would be surprised many times there is a lien on the title. You can't register car until you have clean title. That is why you pay the lien off directly instead of giving money to seller because if you do give him money he can give you title, spend your money but the bank will still own the car. They won't care that you gave him the cash.
I always do wire transfer, clean title only swaps hands. My z was a Airplane ticket to California, my c5 was a airplane ticket to new jersey.
Does vin on car match title? Always a good idea to get a bill of sale as well. Also make sure he signs title over properly to you.
I'd have someone do it for you even if you pay someone a couple hundred bucks. 10.5k is not a huge chunk of money but I wouldn't want someone ripping me off for that much dough either.
Good luck:handshak:

Lee,
I'm both cases, I've bought my ZRs using wire transfer. I did get copies of titles and Bill of Sale.
I would go with a well known Registry member that's close to the seller.

I have a copy of the title, no lien listed.....I sent a bill of sale to him...stipulates I am not responsible for any liens against the vehicle, etc.

When I bought mine we both agreed to let our banks handle it. They did the exchange on our behalf. Seller deposited the title with his bank, once that was confirmed my bank transferred the funds and the sellers bank sent the title to mine.
Don't know if that might work for you.

On my last sale, we did 3rd party inspection service that went over the car took pics sent to buyer and handled the funds transfer.
Was a local contracted Bmw service center type deal...

Lee,
When I was deployed in the Middle East a few years ago I purchased a Lexus SC430 and used an escrow company and it worked out great as I was not going to send that kind of money to the seller and the car was being shipped to Hawaii from S. Carolina.
