Have not done plenum and IHs yet. I'm tempted but I'd like to get motor in and car running. Time in early spring to strip plenum and paint in similar scheme.

pssst I need emblems Lee.

Pete

The spots are bare for the washers and ss allen cap bolts. The Red is tending towards a purple. It has some blue in it and it is a matte or textured finish to it. It should POP like red calipers would on the car.
Besides, what do Greeks know about color?

Tom,

I can't take the credit for the work. I have a friend who owns a body shop and
he really likes working on hot rods, muscle, and Vettes. We used the
VHT Wrinkle for the color but put it over a textured base coat. If anyone else is interested, I can give you Chris' # here in Schaumburg, Il. His shop is
BNC Auto Body and he even took a couple of dents out of the passenger side header collector.

Please give us more details on the paint, and if it was baked. If is a stock VHT color. I want to paint the intake on a 1999 corvette and have been looking for such a color.

PS I am Greek and know **** about colors, but those covers look absolutely stunning!.

Thanks in advance, George

Holy smokes....let me understand this process. The top coat is wrinkle textured header paint(?) over a textured base coat as in base coat/clear coat paint?

....my 88 bird had a textured chip resistant base color coat that had "wrinkles" in it if you had the angle & light just right. You should have seen my face when my bro had it up on the lift in his Ford dealership and I saw the paint...I nearly fainted. The look on my face said it all. He turned to me & said.." that's Ford's idea of how to keep the road rash off the lower body panels, pretty neat, bet you never saw it till now?" It was below the body side molding all around the car.

You guys in the FBI are one hooked up group! More power to you guys!

almost makes me want to start looking for work out that way....either there or somewhere near the WAZOO crew! The only other people that I know that own C4's & live near me are a girl and another guy and they both come to me for help! :sign10: :icon_scra

George,

Thank you for the compliment. I'm pleasantly surprised at the reaction here. Again, Chris at BNC Auto can give you a better rundown but
first there is an enamel base coat. Then the next is a matte black textured coat which is actually the paint uses for truck bedliners.
This provides the textured look. With that you are able to get the textured crinkle look in just about any color you want. The red I used came from a rattle can of VHT hi temp crinkle paint available from Summit. Chris tried this first and found that the crinkle was spotty and uneven at best. So he started looking for another way to get that textured look. This was all paint and no baking was involved.

Here's a shot with the motor coming together at Pete's. BTW, snow is starting to hit. We put coam covers and injector housings on tonight. We are going to do a steering column swap, clutch master/slave cylinder, and gauge cluster. Then motor is ready to pop in.

As an FYI, the Ihs and plenum will be blue as they were. I haven't stripped them yet for the purpose of getting motor done and out of Pete's (graying) hair. I'll be doing that later this spring. Still thinking of the paint scheme for the plenum, although I will be using same colors. Any suggestions welcome now that you've seen cam covers.
Breather vent tubes and PCV to IH tubes will be "polished" along with fuel rails.

Brad,

My thought is to paint the top portion of the plenum in the same wrinkle red, leaving the center depression in silver as in the cam covers. The runners, coolant tubes and IHs would be done in silver.

That would be my opinion as well. I go back and forth on the two coolant tubes. All red, all silver or a combination. I kind of like how the model looked with red where they attach to the plenum and then silver tubes....

Whatever you decide, its looking great!

I appreciate the input. I believe it may sound more complex than it would look. I'm not a proponent of single color LT-5s, except for possibly all silver.
Overall I think it looks too "heavy". I'm looking to accent the motor. Maybe my
Photoshop guru =Jeff= can whip something together to indicate what it would look like.

I've seen motors that have color 1, color 2, color one set ups and they just don't turn me on, that being said some one color set ups don't turn me on either. I really really like the crinkle coated red, if it was my car i'd do the entire engine crinkle coated red, and the letters/numbers black with silver hardware and if i could find them black wires. I'm sure your engine will turn out to be a really good looking piece, what makes the automotive world great, we all like diggerent things :)

Dom you need one of those LT4 Billet Oil filler caps that Cliff, Phil and I are running. Very cheap on Ebay and look great. They come in Gun metal and Chrome billet with the mobil one insert. Just an Idea. Would offset the stainless hardware nicely you have to ask for the mobil one insert. Props to Cliff he found these.

OK guys, Pete called to report that motor started and ran today. I couldn't be there due to work requirements in San Francisco. Kudos to Pete and to Al for overcoming obstacles like 20.6" of snow and to match 3" collectors with 2.5" exhaust. Nothing like the FBI brethern to help out a fellow ZR-1er back in the cockpit. Gotta give out comps to Paul, Jeff, Lee, Jerry's Gaskets, and Marc Haibeck too. They all came to the aid of a brother. They're the best. Motor is up and running albeit needs some tweeking as in possible vacuum leak and better exhaust. With temps at 0 today, it'll be enough to drive the car back home and let it sit for a few weeks, an oil change, then I'll be back at it to get rid of the gremlins, replace the exhaust and possibly put Z06 wheels back on. Then to the dyno for tuning.

Nuttin' like getting back on the horse after "bein' throwed", not to mention adding another 40-50 hp to the rear wheels! The C6 wheels do look nice, but do us a favor and put fresh rubber on them this time.;)

The motor is done and Pete and Al were able to cobble the 2.5" Borla that came with the car enough so I could drive it home. Naturally it needs tuning but I won't do that until I get a proper exhaust on it. There are leaks and that will throw off the logging making the tune not trustworthy.
The 20" of snow doesn't help either. But driving it home Thursday, it felt strong and it took some getting used to but I could tell that even a slight touch to the accelerator brought on a response from the motor that was quicker than I have become used to. This will be an interesting case study of cam selection since Lgaff is building a similar motor but using a larger exhaust cam while I kept the stock exhaust with Pete's Stage II intake.
I'm of the opinion that the LT-5 already has plenty of exhaust capacity as is, at least for a stock block 350. Having heads with cleaned up exhaust ports and headers produces an exhaust that is even more efficient thereby making a increase in exhaust duration counterproductive both for driveability and power. That's my working hypothesis. I think it will also be easier to tune without the additional overlap. In fact, the motor idled "decent" at 800rpm with the tune I had in the previous motor which was just a top end port and headers. Don't get me wrong, it needs work but not a bad starting point. Anyway that's my opinion and we'll see how the numbers line up. Should be an interesting experiment.

I can see that working, what color are you planning on with the TB & airhorn? red crinkle? if so you could cut a Zr1 logo onto the airhorn in silver (the logo the store sells) it would look trick & tie everything together, JMHO
