So what types of TLC does a car like this need? I mean, if a turbo goes out or a wastegate needs to be adjusted, what do you do? Is the motor a stock LT5 or are the heads/cams/intake different? How much boost does this baby churn out. I took a look on Wikipedia and it states they made 450hp and 615TQ ! Is this accurate?

Sounds like a very fun new toy!!!

LGAFF
01-25-2011, 04:07 PM
This is an 87 they were 345hp and about 475lbft if I recall......it needs paint, clear peel is bad, and needs interior....it also has a 4+3 and OD is not engaging, could be a simple fix or might need to be rebuilt. motor is great and no damage to body!

Looks like a stock 87 with NACA ducts on the front

I will repair the tranny and do the interior, will need to wait for paint.

Bottom line 1 of 184 produced, its going to be woth some decent cash...this was a GM option.

Cool man, look forward to hearing your opinions. They are neat cars. How many miles are on it?

They are an L98, not an LT5. It is a stock block and intake, but the internals have been uprated and the compression lowered. Then two turbos are added, and two supplementary injectors are added to the intake tract (making the intake a wet one).

In '87 they made 345hp. None made 450 except for a few 1991 cars where the owners paid more. The '88-91 cars made 403hp, mainly due to larger Rotomaster turbos. The '87 uses smaller IHI turbos, but the upshot is they are still available.

Except for the 4+3 trans, and the NACA ducts looking sort of 80's, an '87 would probably be the easiest to own and really drive hard.

Nope, will get either A mold repros or the 89 prototype wheels. Offset is same as the ZR-1. Will have to get a set at some point... no rush. I need to finish the 90 ZR-1 motor before I get into this one.

Paint is bad and interior shot(or at least the seats)

Lee:

Wow.

I'm officially jealous.

The only question I have is:
Who in their right freaking mind would buy a Callaway and then just let it go to pot?
I mean, heck, it was twice the price of a regular 'Vette, tire shredding fast, and has spectacular good looks.
How could the previous owner not LOVE it?
I just don't get it.

What is the history of the car?

And again, Congrats.
Great find, great buy.

I dig the color! It just needs the engine bay vacuumed out and it will look 10 times better. I kinda dig the stock wheels on the earlier cars, but tires are becoming non-existent in that size. So I can understand tossing some ZR-1 wheels on there.

Cool, I was thinking Paint, Interior and Transmission and around here that is 10k alone.

Those rims that are on the car. Obviously you have tons of Call. Rims but did the owner sell the original rims? Or am I thinking of the 89 car that had different rims?

Dymags were an option, this car used the stockers...its also #33 so no dymags. It will end up with the Prototype ZR-1 or A molds on it......maybe dymags some day. I want to make sure I get the Snakeskinner project done, and that will include buying cams....so will be conservative until the 90 is done.

B2K's are cool. Nice find and great price.

I have a friend here that has a '91 Callaway 500 (one of the last 8 ever built). Tag on the console states #505 of 508. Dark Red Metallic, black interior, hardtop, less than 8k miles. We put it on the dyno two years ago and it was amazing. Laid down 349 HP and 467 TQ. Highest TQ of the day, including a built Viper that laid down only 440 TQ. That Callaway had so much torque it was spinning the rear wheels on the dyno once the turbos spooled up. It went from 2k to 5k like right now. I was impressed.

Good luck, nice car Lee.

Aurora40
01-27-2011, 10:13 AM
The Dymags in '87 were a 16" one, not the 17" Dymags that Callaway used as standard on '88+ cars and that GM used on Challenge cars.

Most '87s had stock wheels.

Unless you keep it "Callaway" original, restoring it probably won't add much equity to the car. And keeping it Callaway means spending big green. You got the car cheap, I'd try to keep it cheap and just enjoy it for what it is. Sounds like that's your plan anyway, though.

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q115/lgaff/cttside.jpg

My first 'vette was an '87 in that dark metallic red. It was tons of fun. But I saw an '87 B2K at Carlisle one year when I had it, and it made my car seem so uninteresting by comparison. It looked just like mine, except with those two NACA ducts on the hood. The way they suggested at turbo-boosted power seemed so awesome.

Cool car, and nice score on it. For the wheels, I'm guessing tires will be the decider, whether you like the BBS's or not. 255/50-16's are becoming quite hard to find. And if they are 9.5" wide, a 245/50 would be a kind of dangerous fit. Dymags were not standard on '87s, they had regular wheels generally. The Dymags that were optional were a) 16", b) really rare, and c) fairly unattractive.

I have to say, the NACA ducts that seemed so cool back then don't really stand the test of time. But I'm sure it'll be fun.

I think I like the sawblades. In their days, the BBS WHEELS were nice but the aesthetic today is for a much fuller wheel face not something narrowed,
IMO.

Very nice Lee. If this one is the same money you were going to pay for the first one you made an offer on I'd say you made out like a bandit.

Enjoy!

Plugs on all L98s are a PITA.....ended up getting it for $11500....

the other one had 10K more miles, needed a full paint job, interior, and new OD unit

This one only needs tires and a new NACA duct..some rear capret

Will pick it up this coming Thursday

i had an l98 before my zr-1 and i only had to do plugs once...i wonder if coming up from the bottom would be better then coming from the top

no, I don't think from the bottom would be easier.. you think the L98 was bad try a LT1 or LT4.. #8 on those is worse then a L98..

solution is to sit backwards in the tire; facing away from the car....postions you hand in the right orientation to thread it...

I think it took me three hours the first time to change L98 plugs

The trick is to know the market, know how long the car has been for sale, and to let them know you can afford it, but don't need it.......not many people can afford these right now, or more importantly qualify to fianance them....lots of bargins

Staying in STL tonight, car seems good, apparently new turbos on the car, interior is not in bad shape....just needs carpet. Paint is alittle rough, but steering is tight, ran at 185 degrees in traffic.

Seems to be a good deal. clutch seems new also

6 hours to get to know the car tomorrow:cheers:

Can't find the "Drool" smiley.
Gosh that is a purdy car.
Good choice on the Proto wheels, they really set it off nicely.

Lee, that car looks so much better with those wheels. Really nice touch. The Dymags will look just as good.

Nice find and nice buy!!
