So now that I've gotten a baseline dyno of my car and am pretty happy with the results, it's time to start Round 1 of my performance mods: Haibeck chip and x-pipe install. Took the car to a local muffler shop in Dallas. While the car was on the lift, I snapped some photos on my BlackBerry. I have a stock exhaust, by the way, with Dynomax mufflers.

Here's a view of my stock resonator:

You can really see the exhaust going from a 2 1/2 diameter to 2 1/4 as it feeds into the resonator. I had the guy cut the pipes right before the tapering so I could keep it at a nice 2 1/2 inches all the way through.

After the resonator and pipes were cut, I took a pic of the opened up exhaust:

One of the things that I found very surprising was the fact that the Resonator is actually a straight-thru design. This made me wonder how much of a performance gain I would actually see? Hmmmm:

Here goes a pic of the final product right before the final welds were completed:

Overall, I am happy with the results. There is a little more of a drone between 1000-1800 rpm but other than that, I really don't notice anything else. The seat of the pants feel was the same. I am supposing that once the headers get installed, this will compliment the performance.

Also, here is a youtube video of me revving up the car after the x-pipe install. There is a raspier sound which reminds me alot of the Corsa.

Oh, and also, the PO had the dynomax mufflers installed and left the stock ZR-1 tips. I LOVE the sleeper look :) !

Sounds good. You should get the muffler tips centered better for a cleaner look. Have fun.

OMG I am DYING for a license plate holder!!!!!! My plate looks so wimpy and sad on there, I totally agree :( If you know of where I can find one, hell even a look-alike will do, it would be MUCH appreciated! Merry Christmas, by the way

Did the ZR-1 exhaust change for 1992? My resonator necked down to under 2". Also your car has rectangle tips, not the dual-squares of '90-91, and I thought, '92.

Can any '92 owners confirm which ones the car came with from the factory?

I don't have a '92, but the exhaust tips on Nacho's car are from a '93 up.

The 93 and up stock tips look best out of any other (IMO).

Wasn't there an article about the restrictions of the ZR1 OEM exhaust , had something about changing over the resonator over to a LT1 unit etc. ?

yes , specificly it was the lt4 resonator that didnt neck down . it was 23/4 all the way through . plus i am wondering about the rear balance pipe that was in this system and if i might control some of the resonance with an xpipe . the rear one was just after the pipe got past the rear end . i hate to say this but trying to find the perfect exhaust , that is reasonably quiet has caused me to now have in the rafters a corsa, flowmaster, corsa , a 90 stkand a 91 stk. currently on the car is the dr gas setup(90) and my do it yourself 23/4 system with what they call a ladder type crossover . heck i could start a vet muffler shop .arguhhhhhhhhh

Well if the buyer backs out, I can PayPal you $ immediately. Do you also happen to have a link for the filler plate on eBay? I did a quick search but didn't come up with anything....

Thanks for all of the helpful links regarding the ZR1 exhaust systems! It'll definitely make for some nice reading on this cold and dreary Xmas day!

Kurt White has 15 of them available, he wants $138.55 a piece.
Gm list was $53 way back in 1992.
