Think I may have found my "Service ABS" issue.
Service ABS light is lit and throwing a code 63.
The ABS solenoid relay is open circuit between pins 85 & 86, so the coil is shorted.
It's NLA at GM, and I'm not having a lot of success online.
Autozone claims to have a replacement but it's a different manufacturer and a special order part.
Anybody got a spare?
Bosch # 0 332 205 003
GM part #: 14105967
Item #4 on picture below.

My Cycloptic Moderator Friend:
Golly, I would just love to do that.
Trouble is, I've been permabanned over there so many times they have threatened to sent out a hit man to shut me up (permanently).

Now that is funny
(not the part about being banned)
I would think this part is shared with the L98 brother, so I suggest calling Jason at vette2vette and see if he has one.
How much is the part from Autozone?

I sent him the link as well. I have bought many parts from him in the past as well. Awesome guy and good quality used parts. Onerarez16 turned him in over at the other forums so he cant sell there as much with out paying a hughe vendor fee.

Looks like I'm gonna have to get creative.
The experts tell me that the relay is a '90 only part and made entirely of unobtanium.
*sigh*

I am trouble shooting a similar issue with the ABS and found the relay at RockAuto under the "Electrical -- Switch and Relay" heading. It is not a Delco part but it does say it cross references to the correct number. Price is approx $50. I have not bought it yet -- sharing that it may be a source.

Darryl:
Thanks for asking.
Not terribly surprised though.
The part has been discontinued for quite some time and from all accounts was a bad design from the get go.

Troy:
I called them today, it's not a stock item, they have to get it from somewhere else.
Autozone also offers a replacement (probably the same manufacturer) and they want $68 for and it's also a special order item.
Neither supplier (Rock Auto & Autozone) offer a warranty on electrical items, if I plug it in and it:
A. doesn't work
B. burns up like the original did
C. doesn't fix the fault
I'm out of luck and out at least $60.
Not that I can't afford it, I'm just a cheap bastage and don't want to waste the money if I don't have to.
I called Haibec this afternoon and he's seen at least 3 of these over the years.
He told me it wasn't worth the trouble trying to locate an OEM part that was crappy to start with.
He suggested that since I wasn't a NCRS kind of guy that I get creative and that I use a modern relay in the old ones place.
The unique part of the old Bosch relay is its base which has funky thick pins for contacts and more importantly is that it's no longer made.
What I plan on doing is to gut the old relay, drill into the back sides of the pins and solder wires into them. I will then crimp on spade connectors to the other end of the wires.
Then plug in a modern spade lug 30a relay which are reliable, cheap and plentiful.
I've got plenty of heat shrink tubing and black tape to dress everything up so that it looks at least as good a factory hack job.
And yes Dynomite (I know you'll be asking) I plan on documenting what I am doing and I'll be sure to take lots and lots of pictures.
(lets just hope my diagnosis is correct and that my cure really is a cure)

Appreciate the offer.
I plan to get to get started on my proposed mod this weekend, depending on how well it goes, I may or may not need your relay.

How to fix Code 63, ABS Solenoid Relay failure.
The original Bosch relay was a bad design and has been discontinued for years. I opted to replace the original with a new style unit which is much cheaper and has a lifetime guarantee.
Remove the solenoid relay, it lives on top of the ABS pump which is located underneath the package tray behind the drivers seat.
It looks like this:

Pry off the metal cover with small screwdriver:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i159/tccrab/ZR1%20ABS%20Bosch%20Relay%20Mod/BoschRelay011.jpg
Relay exposed:

Use dremmel and cutting wheel to remove the guts:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i159/tccrab/ZR1%20ABS%20Bosch%20Relay%20Mod/BoschRelay020.jpg
Drill the back sides of the contact pins being careful not to drill out the rivet that holds the pin to the plastic base.

Solder wires into holes drilled into pins:

Using dremmel grind hole in the side of the old relay to run the wires out:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i159/tccrab/ZR1%20ABS%20Bosch%20Relay%20Mod/BoschRelay025.jpg
I put a small piece of tygon tubing to protect the wires from chaffing on the sides of the hole in the relay cover:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i159/tccrab/ZR1%20ABS%20Bosch%20Relay%20Mod/BoschRelay026.jpg
Crimped and soldered spade lugs for the new relay & quick mount base. I also back filled the tygon tubing with black silicone sealant to protect the wires and seal up the relay:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i159/tccrab/ZR1%20ABS%20Bosch%20Relay%20Mod/BoschRelay028.jpg
Finished product:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i159/tccrab/ZR1%20ABS%20Bosch%20Relay%20Mod/BoschRelay029.jpg
Installed into the ABS pump:
http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i159/tccrab/ZR1%20ABS%20Bosch%20Relay%20Mod/BoschRelay031.jpg
Used Tech One to clear the codes and no more problems.

it looks like a Potter and Brumfield Standard 30A Automotive relay. the type you will find in other locations under the dash

1. Which 30a relay did you end up using (model, part #, and source)? ;)
"FrankenRelay" is a Potter & Brumfield 12v 30a relay. both the relay and it's quick release base can be bought in any car parts store. I got mine from my neighbor who manages a diesel truck repair depot
2. Do you have a schematic showing how you connected the five wires to the new relay from the old relay (what pin to what pin)?
Schematic is on the relay. There is an industry standard for relays, usually (but not always) the pin outs are the same.
3. What gauge wire did you use between the relays and about how long are the wires?
14 gauge primary wire from Home Depot. $2.50 for 20 feet, each wire is about 6 inches long.
4. How exactly did you mount that new relay? Or is it just sitting there by the stiffness of the wires between the two relays?
I didn't want to put a screw through the floorboard so I just left it standing there. There is a thick insulating mat that goes over the ABS pump, I figured it would hold everything in place.
5. Does this modification apply to a 90' Z only?
My research indicates that this relay was used in '86 - '91's Corvettes and trucks, and in Volvo's and BMW's. You'd think there would be ton of them out there but I was able to only find a few and I didn't want to pay over $70 for a stupid relay.
6. I assume Code 63 (ABS Solenoid Relay failure) is a CCM (A & G) code?
BCM code. Can only be read and reset with a Tech One.
Thank ya
You're welcome!!
