View Full Version : Car stalling after Aluminum flywheel install

I changed my clutch and flywheel to a single mass aluminum fidanza and it ran fine for a few times and now it is acting a little weird. Sometimes when I come to a stop with the car in neutral it will stall. Other times, in the same scenario, the idle will drop really low and almost stall but recover. The only thing I changed was the clutch and flywheel, any ideas what might be causing this and possible fixes?

You need to recal your chip for the mod. Much like when you go to headers or do any port work. Go see Corey since your in the hood

the alum flywheel carries alot less inertia to keep the engine turning over at slow speeds. so a bit more revs is needed both to get it going, and the slow idle speed (stock) tends to make it stall more often with the light flywheel

so as the throttle closes, with less flywheel rotational inertia "to transition" to idle, it will be a bit more prone to stalling with the much lighter flywheel. the chip is calibrated for a pretty slow idle speed and the heavier flywheel helps that a bit

best to reprogram the chip to up the target idle speed a 100 rpms or so. it will help smooth at the idle and probably help it rattle less too stock is around 650 and I'd go 750 or even 800 should help

so yes, a retune or at a minimum a tune up will help, (I'd do both)

also try checking the idle air control to make sure it's clean too, fresh, clean injectors, ect....

good luck

Umm! When I did mine I didn't have to recalibrate anything. True it does take a little more finess to get it going from a dead stop and can bogg and kill the engine if not given enough gas. If it boggs down in neutral when coming to a stop then something is creating drag on the crank. This should not be happening if everything was installed correctly. PM on it's way to the new Houston brother.

I forgot to mention it only stalls with the AC on

Again Corey can tune you up or maybe Ripdaddy can hook you up

my '93 does the same thing only when the AC is on. The idle speed is the same as when the AC is off. I thought maybe there should be something that would kick the idle up one or two hundred R's when idling with the AC on that wasn't working properly and I just haven't had a chance to check it out yet. My first solution was to take the top off and enjoy the weather AC free!

Hahaha, try doing that in Houston between May and September.
