Any Chevy dealer can help you.
Bring your original set and a copy of your registration (just in case).

wish i could bring the original set ,but only had one set and they are gone now , do i have to go out and buy new locks or does ,can the dealer set me up with new keys ?????????????
You will need proof of ownership and the VIN. A Chevrolet dealership can get the VATS key code from your VIN number.

is the vats key code the code for the little pellet on the key or does it include the info to reproduce the whole key . i had previosly got the correct blank keys with the right pellet code for both my zr1s. just hadnt gotten around to getting them copied . i am getting copies made for my 92 tomarrow .i have the correct blank for the 90 but nothing to make a copy from ??/ thanx for the info so far.i guess i will fess up as to where i lost the keys , at one of nevadas finest brothels. guess more than my business went into the hole :)

Call the dealer and see if they can still get the key codes.
im not sure if they still have the stuff from back then.
I do have an ignition switch with key if you need one
Id sell if not to hard to get in and swap them then you can get the key cut with the correct pelet for your car with this lock cylinder.
the code has nothing to do with the switch its all in the BCM.

The resistance of the little pellet in the key is what matters. There are 15 different pellets.
If you already have the correct blanks, you're over the biggest hurdle. The VIN should provide the Dealer with the key cut info.

So....how do you get the blank key with the correct little pellet in the key :icon_scra
Lets say I lost my keys and only have the VIN and TITLE (Registration) to the car. Lets say I have no blank keys with correct pellet ;)
If I present VIN, Registration, Photo ID (Drivers license) to the Dealer.......
A Dealer can get (has on hand) the key blank with the correct pellet from the VIN?
Same goes for Key Cut information?
They will charge you big time to get pellet code. You take your existing key to radio shack and they can tell you the code, you cross reference the ohms to find your number which is between 1-15. You can buy extra blanks for 25 dollars pair then have locksmith cut them for a few bucks as long as you have original set of keys. Otherwise it will easily cost you 200 at dealer.

I had my dealer check the resistance of my key (no charge) and I wrote it down for future reference. I also ordered a blank key with correct resistance from MidAmerica or Eckler's. I believe it was about $14. I would suggest this to all who have not done this yet. I was a boy scout many moons ago and still remember the motto: "Be Prepared".

Great information John  I added that information to post #11 above which has discussion/information summary. It appears if you have your own original key, you can for maybe a total under $30 buy a correct blank from MidAmerica and go to WalMart and get that blank key cut as a spare key.
You can measure the resistance of you own key
Take an ohm meter and measure across the little gold chip inside the black area in center of key.....measure from one side to the other

Damn Dynomite, If you had code #8 I could get you an ignition key for under $10.00.
I might be able to get code #7, I'm checking into it for you.

#8s are cheaper or you happen to have the same # :D
I'm not sure what #'s I have. I have multiple sets on my Corvettes except for my 93, I only have 1 set and that rarely gets driven. I'm going check all mine this week.
I do have an extra ignition key for #14 but I highly doubt any of my cars are #14. Also, its not 100% perfect, it has GM logo on one side and cadillac on the other although I'm sure it would work fine regardless.
If anybody wants to post up their Numbers I could probably get a cheaper rate if we buy multiple keys etc.

Check at a GM dealer. I think most any of them can make a key for around $25 or so. I got a blank off ebay for $12 and then took it to Wally World. They cut the new one and it worked fine.

So a hooker has a set of keys for your car? Bye, bye car. Change some locks instead.

Im not sure about vin an registration. If that works great.
I was under impression, they use tech 1 or tech 2 to interrogate vats and a few other things, then they have to figure out key or replace cylinder and key.
Regardless, my friend who works at dealer said it can get expensive quick to always have spare key on hand.
Maybe they can get keys cut from vin alone, if so great.

How did you previously get the correct pellet code?
Verify key several times before discounting it. Vats can be problematic.
Once the security light is lit, you need to wait 4 full minutes before trying again. If you turn key again before 4 mins nothing will happen and the 4 mins will reset itself again. Also make sure that the clutch is fully against floor ( no drivers mat partially under pedal) or the car won't start either.
Have dealer verify pellet code then verify yourself or go radioshack and have them take reading as well to validate dealers info.
Sometimes pellets can be funny, very picky if wet as well.
A tech 1 would be useful, can you scan codes?

According to my Tech1 manual, you can check the VATS Pass Key A/D using the Body Systems cartridge. Under "Data List" it will read the key code and compare it to the code stored in memory and give the "Range" number. The problem is you have to have the key in the ignition and turned to "ON". I don't see where the Tech1 will read the stored code without the key in the ignition and turned on.
The owner's manual says that a dealer or certified locksmith can read the stored key code.

update , dealer can get the key code to cut the key but gm doesnt have the pellet info on any cars before 96 anymore. so i am going to load the car on a AAA wrecker and take it to the dealer to figure out . thankfully i have AAA premier so i get 1 200 mile tow for free . dealer said it will be 85 to get the correct code and get it working for me . i thought i had the correct pellet code from before when i had to get another key made when the original key failed . guess my memory is failing too . thanx to all for your input .
