Ricky was nice enough to let me borrow his Tech 1 scanner for my ABS problem but cant quite figure out how to use it.I plug it into the cig lighter, plug it into the underdash port, type in year 1991 and scroll down and select stored trouble codes and it asks for the ABS adapter.Am I missing something here?

Jeff, this is just a fwiw in that I'm not positive it applies to a Tech1 scanner.
On my snap-on scanner there are software modules that I plug into the scanner to do trouble shooting on the different vehicle systems. I have a general GM cartridge and a GM engine trouble shooting cartridge in the scanner when I do the DTC's for the motor controls. If I do my abs system, I need the general GM cartridge + the specific ABS cartridge plugged into the scanner before it will do any diagnostics.
Now if I want to just pull ABS trouble codes, I use my Gordon jumpers. However, if I want to run any of the tests I have to use the scanner with the ABS cartridge in the machine.
I am fairly sure that the Vertronix Tech 1 and Tech 1A scanners are the same as I keep looking for one on e-bay with a fairly complete cartridge library as the older software is sometimes hard to find.

I know that all the Tech 1 & 1A machines I looked at on e-bay used a software cartridge system similar to what my snap-on scanner uses....so yes if you don't have a cartridge labeled ABS, then you need to see if you can get one.

You need the ABS Brake cartridge p/n TK03030B for, I believe, 1988-93. Good luck finding one, I have been looking for a while. There are TK03030 cartridges all over, but I can't find the "B". Anyone out there have one would like to sell, let me know.

John,
I recently checked the ABS system on my car with my Tech 1 and the first thing that comes up is the "adapter" item you mentioned. This is not the software cartridge but an additional adaptor that plugs into the end of the regular Tech 1 connection that goes to the ALDL connector. From my memory this additional adaptor correctly connects to the ABS pin out on the ALDL connector. I would check that first as I am not sure your issue is the software at this point. Could be wrong, but I distinctly remember that item poping up as well. Hope that helps.

Your missing the ABS adapter, I think it pins out certain areas in the ALDL port. See below I have a $17 suggested solution to the problem

you need the mass storage cartridge in tech-1 and the bosch ABS adapter plugged in to port under dash.plug tech-1 into adapter.

To plug into the ALDL you need the 12/14 pin adaptor TA01140. I don't think that you "need" the mass storage adaptor unless you are storing data to download into a computer.

By the way, whats going on with your ABS. I ask because I had a "Service ABS" light on my DIC and it turned out to be the "Lateral Accelerator" behind the radio in the dash. Pretty easy fix and not expensive!

John actually you do. Remember the Tech-1 is from the Atari generation. The brake systems module is a mass storage cartridge. The tech-1 without these cartridges wont know what to to as the cartridges contain the programs. Thats why there are so many cartridges from EEPROM to Body systems, to Chasis systems ETC.

I do have a used 94 Lateral Accelerator that I got from someone on this net. It came out of an 8,000 mile car. The pendulum is free, so I think it works. My 90 was different, so I could not use this one. Let me know your p/n and I will check it.
I paid $29 for it.

Im interested if Jeff doesnt want it but im not sure if a 91 one uses the same as a 94. I will reference a few numbers. What part number is it?

There are two numbers on the part: 10143543 and 09401032.

fwiw....that sounds like the cartridge you need to plug in to do ABS. I know on my snap on scanner I have to have the "GM Master Trouble Shooting" cartridge plugged in and the "ABS" cartridge plugged in to do any ABS work.

The TK03030B is specifically identified as "88-93 ABS". I have a TK03030 marked "88-91 Brake". I don't know if TK03030C "88-93 Brake" works for ABS. I think they are specifically marked "ABS" I think you also need a specific ALDL adaptor for doing ABS diagnostics. I am not 100% on any of this, it's just what I understand from reading the Tech 1A manual.

I got the ABS adapter and still got nothing,I give up on this bull$hit.Ill just keep my eye out for somebody else thats having the same problem and learn from that. What have I tried?Paper clip, cheap auto parts scanner,4 high end scanners and finely the Tech 1 scanner.I know if I keep plugging away Ill find the problem,I just thought I might know what the problem is by now. This all started after I replaced the brake pads,I remember I had to force the pads back into the bores of the calipers so maybe I did something.I might check the switch at the M/C.Thanks a to all for the suggestion.
