View Full Version : Ok, I ordered my headers from ss

Curious about two things;

1: Never having pulled an engine on one of these things, it seems like a pretty straightforward 2 hour or so job. Would it be easier just to pull the engine, go over everything while it is out, install the headers and replace (I have a full shop with lift, hoists, stands, etc.

2: SS told me that all they use for "header gaskets" is red high temp rtv :icon_scra. I have done a lot of fab on exhaust headers/turbo manifolds, and have never heard of such things. Typically I will purchase metal shim gaskets, or make multi layer ones myself. What do you guys suggest, are they dead on with their suggestion? I am not calling them out for anything, but it just doesn't seem "right" to me, but I do not know much about these engines at this point.

With these cars people are going to tell you things that dont quite make sense.Ive heard there is no gasket used with the headers.Ive got headers on a 64 Nova and I was told to use the same sealer for gaskets. Its been a few years and Ive had no issues.

You definitely want to install your headers with a new set of gaskets.

You should also get a dipstick tube seal from Jerry while you're at it.

You will also most likely need O2 sensor extensions and need to fab up a bracket for your dipstick tube. Check these threads for more info:

Thanks scott. Does jerry offer a "full" engine gasket kit? I would like to orer a couple just to keep them onhand. Do you also recommend the bolt upgrade he offers? What else would you recommend keeping on hand for this thing?

TIA

You should shoot Jerry an email or PM him (A26B). Jerry has whatever you need or can point you in the right direction.

He and others here are much more knowledgeable than myself. I couln't offer broad recommendations.

But I think I have a new set of Stage 8 header bolts I'd sell for $45 shipped if you're interested.

I just ordered a whole slew of gaskets from his site to keep ready. I could have sworn that I saw an upgrade bolt kit for the cam covers on his site, but I couldn't find them.

I may be interested in those bolts, but at this point I am not sure what comes with them and what doesn't.

the bolt kit replaces the torks bolts on the plenum and cam covers ,they are stainless bolts also , remember to get the dowdy washer that go under the bolts on the cam covers or you will leak oil every where

ps they are allen bolts which we like better than the torks bolts which like to mess up if you dont get the torks socket in there perfectly

Just finished my order with them, thanks Jeff.

Do you think that I should go ahead and order new injectors for this thing as well? The guy that had it before me said that he did so, but I am not so sure of the work that was done. While it is all apart, I would prefer that it is all going to be right. Also the coils, do people just typically go with factory replacements?

Thanks

most guys just use the factory coils, they are a good piece for our cars. on the injectors, you might test to see if they hold pressure, what kind did he use ?????

Ok, going through some of the paperwork from the previous owner, I found the receipt for the injectors he ordered in 1997 for it. Just looking for feedback on the injector types, and whether I should replace these with brand new lucas disk type (I have always had great luck v. single pintle)

Injectors were purchased new from five0motorsports.com on 6/20/97

8 bosch 0280150561/556 (11140,11122, zr1-11115) Brand new secondary set

8 bosch 0280150561/556 (zr1-11113) Brand new primary set

You can buy the Lucas injectors, should be fine.
If you have a 1990-1992 ZR-1 the primary and secondary Injectors have some small difference.
The secondaries look just like any other injector i.e.like LT1 injectors the primaries seal on the body of the injector the O-ring sits in the intake/Injector Housing also the key way for the electrical plug is offset on the primary injectors where as the secondary injector key way is in the middle just file down the keyway for the primary injectors.
You will understand it better when you take her apart.

1993-1995 injectors are same just keyway difference.
