I want to thank all of you who have either contributed or are in the process of doing so. I'd like to make this a super nice event so if & when you can, it is much appreciated. Some thoughts:

We will have veggie burgers available. Please let us know if you prefer them.
We will also be offering our famous BOWTIE BURGERS. These are about 1 pounders!
Smoked Pork, Ribs, chicken, potatoes, etc.etc.

I'm checking into having some very unique ZR-1 LT5 related items made for the event.

We will be awarding trophies for the most Corvette dressed. You figure it out.

Oh, more stuff:

This year we will have music, chairs and tables and we expect each of you to being your better halves. Wives and girlfriends are welcome! You can even bring BOTH of them if you want.

Music arrangements depend on our budget!

Thanks guys, you have contributed $400 so far into the kiddie with ZR1 WON being #1. A good party will go about $2,000 depending on the music.

Were any of you at Stillwater in '93? See those beautiful table decorations made out of LT5 parts? Guess what I'm working on......

Hey Jim, Will you POST a picture of that WORLD FAMOUS BOWTIE BURGER. I tried to buy one of the cutters like you all use and only got a contender; even the cookies it makes are whimps... Nothing like the monster champion your design and manufacturing helpers made for yours.

Re: The BBQ on Thursday Nite, May 13th.
Thanks for your email responses gang, it's going crazy. It's a little bit early to be counting heads right now but we'll need to get a count as we get closer. Sounds like a heck of a turnout already. I wanted to add something. Several of you have offered to contribute to the cause. Well, we'll run up a bill with a band or DJ, some good food and a couple of kegs for the weeknd, decorations, video projector, etc, etc. So, IF you would like to contribute, you can mail a check or use my PayPal account (vandornjim@aol.com). If you use PayPal, look for the reason of sending money and there will be a tab marked "personal". Using this will avoid the usual fees they take out.

I will keep a list of contributions and contributors and make sure you all are rewarded for your efforts. I've found several large boxes with various Corvette, Pirate and ZR-1 T-shirts which might be perfect for you all. Also, any leftover funds will be used to buy a brick, etc, donation to the NCM so don't be shy. And let me add this. Anyone who contributes $50 or more will receive a brand new Legend Lives 18 page full color brochure from April 1995. It is packed with color pictures and advertisers, and many notable people from the ZR-1 community, many of whom are no longer with us. This would make one heck of a nice autograph book for this event after some 15 years ago it was printed. I have sold these on EBay for over $100 EACH. I have a very limited supply but will offer them in appreciation and in order to help make this event a terrific and memorable success. While they last!

Of course you all know that I like to make our events something to remember so rest assured there will be a little package given out to each of you regardless of any contributions. I would like to ask each of you to once again send me photos of your cars so I can do a commemorative DVD. Photos should be of a ZR-1/Grand Sport, no people, in scenic or historical landmark themes. Military/Armed Forces pics work really well. I'll need 30-40 so dig deep.

Of course we don't want to interfere with any other plans, i.e., the NCM or Registry agendas. These thoughts are just for Thursday nite's little get together here at Auto Masters. It seems there is another BBQ scheduled for Friday so let me say that we'll look to set the menu different than the usual. And remember. A very special award goes to the most ZR-1 and Grand Sport dressed/equipped. I'd say we better have a Mr & Ms of each!!

Thanks in advance!!

I agree with Keith and Dennis. I know that in past JVD gatherings (both in SoCal & BG) there was a bowl where participants could throw in some cash but even then I suspect Jim always spent a bundle of his own money on the party.
I'm sure AutoMasters/JVD like the rest of the business world is feeling the pinch of the current economy.
Please this year let's make sure our contributions are generous and show JVD how much he's appreciated for all he's done for us and our hobby
Thanks for tolerating my jabberings,

HI to all! Some of you might you might have heard I broke my leg last Wednesday. The details are coming back to me now. I think the beagle had something to do with it, I think it was an assassination attempt. For sure. I want each of you to take just a minute and realize how fortunate you are to be able to breathe, walk, go tinkle, everything!!

Yes, it has become clear that the beagle laid one of her toys in my way and when I went to take my plate to the sink, I thought I stepped on her so I did and double full ganor with a twist, hitting my head on the way down, resulting in my left overs being sprayed all over the carpet. When I woke up, all I saw was this huge tongue licking up mashed potatoes, green beans and of course, the pork tenderloin. I will deal with her later....when I can catch her!!

OK< about the BBQ. Here's a list of those who I have on the contribution list. Please check your name to make sure it is accurate. We want to thank all of you who have sent in your contributions. Those with Astericks donated $50 or more!! Also, if you have a guest, please send us their names.

Bill & (Guest?) Strowbridge** , George Braml***, Robert Gillig*, David Kelly*, Dennis Fierstein*, Buzz (This is all I have for you) *, Jay & Loretta Goatcher, *, Thomas Del Guidice**, Keith Moudy*, Ron Richardson*, Ted Feder,*, Jim Voter*, Eric Chambers*, Peter Polatisidis, Frank Urbanati*, Francis Gilbride**, David Johnson, Kevin Mitchell**, Ramon Perramon*, Joseph Thomas**, Steve Horton*, John Powers**, Eric Jackson*, Richard & Susan Egelstad*

We also want all of you to know that contributions to the party are not mandatory but we will greatly appreciate your names via RSVP so we have enough of everything for everybody. Those not on our list come game day will have their choice of Kibbles & Bits and MilkBones.

So let me give you an update for some of what we have planned. We also have several BIG surprises for you but they will be unveiled at the party itself.

Cooking will begin Wednesday Morning. Smoked Boston Butts, Ribs, Briskets. This is REAL food not the usual catered in beans, slaw and chicken.
4:00PM Thursday- Doors open. Social Hours begin. Beer & Wine, BYOB, Soda and Mixers provided.
5:00PM Thursday- Videos begin (big screen) buffet dinner begins. Smoked Pork, BowTie Burgers, Ribs (Memphis style), grilled potatoes, Salad, etc.etc.etc.
6:30PM: Presentation begins, Guest Speakers, video, more presentations, 50-50 raffle, auction of table decorations, auto graphs, etc.etc.etc.

You don't want to miss this party. It will be memorable.
P.S. Some of you might have heard they are in the process of shutting down the MerCrusier plant in Stillwater OK where they built all of our engines. Of course this has c aused some severe economic setbacks for many of our LT5 Gang members. Because of your generous donations, along with a bit of beer money from the Beagle Cremation Fund, I have offered some gas money for a few of these folks. One of these fine folks is donating some of the table decorations (Cam Covers, plenums, etc).

P.S.S. Also, there will be members of our Assembly Plant Corvette Club volunteering for setup and take down duties so you guys can really enjoy yourselves. Did I forget anything yet? Oh, yes there will be Kareoke and Hib will be doing his Queen Latiffa version of "Islands in the sky"...

Hey Gang!
Just another update on the ?Legend Lives On? BBQ at Auto Masters, May 13th, at the ZR-1 & C4 Gathering. We?re going to ROCK!
So far, nearly 100 people registered or otherwise RSVP?d including some friends from MerCruiser, GM and all over Corvetteland. Thanks to all of you who have contributed to the piggy bank. I can assure you we will have a memorable event because of it. I even received a check for $75 from a friend in Afghanistan. He couldn?t be with us but hoped we could use his donation to make this the best Gathering yet. His Mom and Dad (The Egelstads) are favorites of mine and they will be here. I won?t be cashing that check and I will also be inviting his wife to join us for a heck of a nice party. Did I mention our guest speaker?
World famous GM Engineer Jim Minneker will be our guest speaker and will be presenting a slide show of the trials and tribulations of developing the ZR-1. Jim gave this presentation back at the Thunder at Stillwater event and it was a knockout. This is sure to be the hit of the evening. We will also be showing the GM video of the ZR-1 introduction, the World Record Run, and maybe even a Pirate clip or two on our 60 inch big screen.
Our friends at Budweiser are providing kegs, kegorators, and beautiful banners, we have already received a 200 pound box of LT5 engine parts for table decorations and of course, an auction or two. General Custer (Greg London) will be smoking his famous pork butts and the BowTie burger cutters are ready to go. Did I say Ribs?
The shop is booking up so if you have any issues we can help you with, please let us know asap.
We are working a trade for a new sound system for the shop. A guy with an 80 Vette needs a tranny, so we?ll have some tunes and a nice podium setup for our speakers as well.
Again, thanks for your contributions so far and we?ll see you soon. If you haven't RSVP'd me with your name and the number of guests, please do so. We don't want to run out....(kidding).
p.s. I?m still trying to put an LT5 on a wheel chair but so far no success. Leg is coming along but I guess I won?t be dancing much. Sorry Hib?.

Hi to all

All contributions are appreciated, thanks.

Fortunately we are still high and dry from the rains.

Things are coming along terrific. Our guest lists includes most all of the VIP's and 100 of you. Our guest Speaker will be JIm MInneker giving us the humrouis side of the development of the LT5. Others include John Hienricy, Tommy MOrrison, JIm INgel, Dave McLellan, Fred Gallash, Ralph Kramer, Jack UNderwood, Graham Behan, Gary Cline and others.
I also have a special invitation out to another very special Corvette person but am still waiting to hear back.

Table decorations are underway, sound system is on, registration packets are going together. YOU're gonna love those! I also called Dave Kimball, the world's Corvette illustrator and although he couldn't come, he sent an item for our auction that should blow your socks off! It has something to do with a famous magazine cover...

Also, several of you have reserved time for work on your cars. We will have a full LT5 staff on hand. If any of you need technical service, please let us know ahead of time.

thanks and see ya soon!

OK, so there's no drag racing at BG this year so you'll have to bench race instead. Maybe that means Frank's car won't be staying with us. :-)

As for the 240 registered, we have 100 coming to the BBQ. Please register with us if you are coming to the BBQ here. We can only handle 125 or so.

Thanks & See Ya Soon!

Welcome aboard Paul and Rick. Wel, it looks like we've almost hit the cutoff mark, sorry on one hand but on the other, we're going to have a nice time. I'm still trying to figure out how much room FU2 is going to need to do the Lindy hop and East Coast Swing. Someone else is doing the Jitterbug. Man....I'm glad I'm not getting old....

Having fun has been the last 20 years since I entered this arena. The many friendships, a couple of flame wars, who could ask for anything else?

We've lost a few over the years but there are still many of the old guys and now many new ones coming to see what this is all about. Someone told me the other day they hadn't seen me so busy since the Legend Lives event. Sure brought back a lot of memories. We'll see if we can't create a new memory or two with "The Legend Lives On".

Thanks again to all of you who are making this event one to remember. The NCM says the registrations are topping 250 and I know of many who are coming to register Thursday with the NCM. =D>

We have some terrific auction items for our BBQ auction. When you find out who the benefactor is I'm sure it will warm your hearts.

Hey Gang,
I just wanted to give everyone a last update prior to your departure for Bowling Green. Weather is supposed to be very nice but warm for our BBQ. Around 88 during the afternoon and then cooling off to a beautiful 65 or so. Believe it or not we?ve already begun prepping the meats so at this time I?ll declare the BBQ full and registrations are now closed. We?ve got a huge crowd coming, some great things to see and some really nice items for our auction and raffle.
Things will be kicking off here at 5pm just as the NCM closes. Food will be served at approx. 6pm.
We are asking all of you to park in the Vette City parking lot directly behind the shop as we will be using our parking lot for deliveries and display vehicles. Of course any handicappers are welcome (I have a new found respect for them!) J
If any cares to make a last minute contribution you may do so at my PalPal address: vandornjim@aol.com and we will also have a kiddy at the door.
We have some special surprises for all of you and hope this will be a memorable evening.
See you all soon and DRIVE CAREFUL!

It?s not about the car?.
It?s 4:45am Sunday morning and my son just left with a guy named Bill Strowbridge who came from Washington to be a part of this weekend. Months ago when Bill called me and asked what I was going to for the 20th Anniversary of the ZR-1, I didn?t have an answer. I hadn?t thought about it. In the past a small group of diehards came to Bowling Green, had some beer and pizza, made a donation to the NCM and went home. Much to my dismay.
Several years ago some of you might have been present when the NCM?s new ?Events Director? Roc Linkov, walked up to our small group of C4 people and announced the event was to be no more. There would be no auction and in fact, if the ZR-1 folks wanted to come to Bowling Green, they could come with the Z06 folks and they would call it the ?Z Fest?. As Roc spoke, I saw red.
I went to the microphone, looked at Roc and Adam and said; ?Who do you guys think you are?.? I went on about how the NCM was there because of us, and that we had supported it, saved it from extinction, and will continue to do so. And as I looked into the eyes of the small group there, I could see terror in the eyes of NCM supporters such as Hutch and others. Many hated me for saying what I did. I said what I felt in my heart and when I returned to me table, some shook my hand and didn?t say a word.
That Monday morning Adam Boca, NCM assistant events person, who had written a beautiful testimonial for my website, asked that it be removed and any endorsement of me or my company be withdrawn. Of course I laughed and left it there for 6 months but I finally removed it, and replaced it with many others, but I was the Black Sheep, the Pirate of the NCM for years to come.
This past weekend has left me speechless. The 20th Birthday of the ZR-1 was the best event I?ve seen since?..well?..since we did the Legends Lives. When I decided to do something for this event, I asked for your support and contributions. The next day I came in my office and found $1800 in my pay pal account. The first of which was from who else, Bill Strowbridge. The guy who bought Doug Johnson?s ?Beast 2?.
For those of you who made it, thank you for making it the best event in many, many years. For those of you who couldn?t attend, this post is for you.

Just like the days of old, the ZR-1 folks came from across the globe. Names and faces I?ve not seen for some 15 years. As usual, the Egelstads from Washington came but they were in for a surprise. Unknown to them, their son Eric, the Platoon Sergeant of the 1St Platoon, 101st Airborn (Air Assault Division) US Army, was conspiring with me to bring awareness of our troops who are serving across the globe. His current assignment is in the Zanbar Province in Afghanistan, one of the hottest military combat zones known today. The proceeds from our BBQ is going to them so that they may be a little safer, and a bit more comfortable. Just a note. Eric?s platoon has been deployed since January. To date, they have been attacked 127 times. Not counting today?.
Throughout the weekend we were inundated with offers of help. When Bill Strowbridge arrived I gave him a towel and some wax and pointed him to the shop. His eyes glissoned, he smiled and he went to work. Although I was consumed with the preparations for the largest party we?ve ever done, 225+, I noticed Bill was relentless with the tasks I had given him. He polished and shined every single piece of equipment, he ran every errand, he was right there every time I needed him. He was soaking wet in the humidity, his diabetes caused discomfort, but he was there and enjoying every minute of it. He reminded me of his car?s namesake, Douglas K. Johnson, who pushed me to accomplishments I never would have considered undertaking without his support and guidance. Had Bill also inherited the Beast?s former owner?s support duties as well??
Now in the past the NCM has not gone to any extremes to dress up the museum for a few ZR-1 relic fans. To move a car, let alone an entire display takes a ton of time and therefore resources. Resources cost money and money has been short. I received many complaints about the NCM?s lack of attention to us after all, without the ZR-1 group, it wouldn?t be even be here today. But this weekend something has happened?. The NCM was adorned with some 20 variants of the ZR-1. Some of the rarest cars that exist were on display. The new Conference Center of the NCM was pleasantly filled, but most importantly, there was also a bar?.:-)) Roc and his staff did a magnificent job and all of you will agree. If not, we?ll step outside?J
You see, some time ago I received a surprise call from Roc Lincov at the NCM. Somewhat reluctantly I returned the call to find out that I was invited to lunch. Just Roc and myself. Having a deadly weapons permit I thought of wearing a long shirt but then thought better of it. Our lunch began with me telling Roc I had respect for him for inviting me to lunch after all these years. That takes Balls. In the next 2 ? hours we talked about how we could improve the NCM.
Well last night folks, was a dream come true. Our room was filled with some of the best of the best. And this time there would be no wrapped sandwiches from a cooler and a bag of chips. Nope. The very same caterer, Mariahs, (who did the Legend Lives) catered the event and it was the best food I?ve had in a long time. Well, at least since Thursday?J Roc Lincov, the man I so heavily scoulded in front of many of you, was man enough to set aside our differences and make something positive of it. The NCM's schedule of events was superb. Some of you donated items for us to auction and when we ran short of time, we brought them to the NCM and raised them $2500. Of course there WILL be a few items going on Ebay...:-D
Congratulations to all of you who have supported our hobby and kept it alive. For remembering what that GM guy, Jack Underwood, once told me at Stillwater:
?We have passed the torch to you and it is now your responsibility. Without you guys, that flame will die.?
Although our flame may not be the blow torch that it once was, it is still burning in our hearts. Thanks to Dave Bright for his unwavering dedication for all these years, keeping us together, guiding us, just like a Mom. And David Johnson who led the event organization for the Registry. And all the rest of you who continue to contribute.
I can?t tell you how many folks came up to me and told me this was their first ZR-1 Gathering. Others said it had been years since they?ve been. It was monotonous, etc. You?re right, it was. But not anymore.
So who else do you think offered to take Jim Jr to the airport this Sunday morning at 4:45 am? Bill Strowbridge. And as the thunder and lightening came from the west, Bill shook my hand and offered his praise for such an enjoyable weeknd. I smiled at him and remembered the quote from our dear departed friend, Douglas K. Johnson, who seems to still be watching over us all, guiding us and inspiring us even after his departure from this world.
?It?s not about the car, Bill. It?s about the People? I said. ?And whether you like it or not, you are now my Douglas K. Johnson?.?
Bill's eyes filled with tears as he climbed into his rental.
P.S. I flew Jim Jr in from California because I needed another LT5 wrench. Well, OK, maybe because it is one of my best excuses for getting to see him again. But I have to say, he was there for all of us every minute of every day. He makes me so proud I can?t describe it...must take after his Mom, huh?
Now for a nap...=D>

Hey Gang, I just did my little shin-dig, the bulk of the work was done by David Johnson and Roc and his staff. And of course it wouldn't be anything without so mnany of you all attending. I'll bet we set a record for girls in attendance and MAN....we there some :censored: GIRLS!!

I've heard from all my GM buddies and I think they're coming back again next year. See, all we needed was a littel rejuvenation and a couple short skirts!!
