Many thanks to Jim and Bob for work they've done on the VIN's and RPO's for all ZR-1's and thanks to Mom for making this information available.

It was Jim's vision and hardwork, I just helped him out.

As to the data, there seem to be some discrepancies with the way some of the cars' production options were digitized. Some have RPO's that are not real (they have things like periods in them), which were likely transcribed incorrectly into digital format. Some have been corrected because they were fairly obvious (like a two-top car with no roof option, but a mysterious "wrong" option that is quite similar to a clear top selection). Some are not obvious at all. So if your specific car has a problem and you know for sure what the build option was, let us know and we'll fix it.

This doesn't affect the major options like colors, air-con, etc. It's the stuff that has no real meaning so it's hard to know what they are. It's not many cars either, but it would be nice to get those little things worked out.

Bob/Jim,

If the discrepancies were consistent I would think I could likely sort them. If you've a "sampling" of the car numbers and the RPO's you believe were incorrectly generated send them on and I'll check those car numbers and the RPO's!

I agree with Bob. There are still a lot of things that we will be able to learn about the VIN's and RPO's as more people examine the data.

I enjoyed putting this together, and I hope others will get enjoyment out of learning more about our cars.

Dave,

I am in the middle of business/work stuff this week end. I will send you a list of some sample when I get some time to look at the data again.

Yes it is awesome, now we know exactly how many 90s had C60

Yes, very nice! Thanks guys!!

Not to sound unappreciative, but I did want to point out one error I found in case it hasn't been noticed yet. There are a number of 1990 cars that are listed as Ruby Red. Maybe they were supposed to be Dark Red Metallic instead?? :dontknow:

I do not see any 1990 cars listed as Ruby Red. Can you give me the car #'s or more specifics about which list you saw them on.

Thanks,

Jim

I think this is where I was looking:

http://www.zr1netregistry.com/member/ZR1_color_number.htm

But I seem to be getting an error now when I search. Searching for 68U, I now get the following:

Option 68U

This option was found on 426 cars

Description:

EXTERIOR COLOR,PRIMARY (68U)
EXTERIOR COLOR,PRIMARY,BRILLIANT RED MET (68U)
EXTERIOR COLOR,PRIMARY,DARK SADDLE METALLIC (68U)
EXTERIOR COLOR,PRIMARY,DARK SADDLE METALLIC (68U)
EXTERIOR COLOR,PRIMARY,RUBY RED METALLIC (68U)

Jim, search the DB, enter 1990 for year, and ruby red for the color, I get 181 results.

181 cars have these options:

1990 1G1YZ23J2L5800033 Show (http://aurora40.dyndns.org/member/zr1prod/cars/33) 1990 1G1YZ23J4L5800101 Show (http://aurora40.dyndns.org/member/zr1prod/cars/101) 1990 1G1YZ23J6L5800102 Show (http://aurora40.dyndns.org/member/zr1prod/cars/102) 1990 1G1YZ23J5L5800138 Show (http://aurora40.dyndns.org/member/zr1prod/cars/138) 1990 1G1YZ23JXL5800149 Show (http://aurora40.dyndns.org/member/zr1prod/cars/149)

When you search for Dark Red Metallic cars, there are none.

If you click the cars, they genuinely have that RPO.

GM used 68U for Dark Red Metallic in 1990. In 1991, DRM became 75U. They used 68U again in 1993 for Ruby Red. I can update the color description to have both, but that's how GM did it.

Would you want to see two colors listed, one the 1990 DRM, and one Ruby Red? It seems odd to me since it's an RPO search, but if that logically makes sense to people, I could do it.

A HAH, The problem is that GM used the same RPO for different colors in different years, and different RPO's for the same color in different years.

68U was Brilliant Red Metallic in 1990 (marketed as Dark Red Metallic) and in 1993 68U was the code for Ruby Red.

In 1991 to 1995, Brilliant Red Metallic (Dark Red Metallic) was RPO 75U.

Another example is Competition Yellow. In 1990 and 1993-1995, the RPO was 53U. In 1991-1992, the RPO was 35U.

Good morning Bob, I guess we were typing at the same time.

My philosophy with the yellows was to honor GM's RPO organization. So two yellows are listed, yellow and comp yellow. With the exception of the roof panels, everything is that way (1990 roof options are moronic).

I can change the colors to be separate items if that is how it makes sense to others. Personally I prefer the RPO-based approach, but it's no big deal either way.

Also, and I think I speak for Jim as well, I want to say "thanks" for the feedback. There's an awful lot of data surrounding ~7,000 cars, each with about 40 RPOs on average, so it's hard to check everything. Getting feedback is helpful, plus it also means people are using the tools. :)

You gotta get up pretty early in the morning to outsmart me! :dancing

Thanks for the clarifications! So if want to buy touch-up paint, and use 68U as the paint code, I may actually be getting the wrong color? That's good to know and means I need to make sure I'm getting 68U for the right year.
