Starting to locate sources for the special tools I will be needing to assemble the LT5 stroker motor I've got in the works. To go the 402 CID route with the 4.0" crank I have 4.0" liners will be required. Anybody have a good suggestion on where I can borrow, rent, or otherwise acquire reasonably a 4.0" torque honing plate for an LT5? Right now I'm thinking of using an local motor machine shop that is well versed in automotive engine liner installations but unfortunately they do not have a LT5 torque plate on hand for finishing the liners once they are installed in the block. Found a source for a BJH plate here: http://www.cylinderheadsupply.com/6604.html (http://www.cylinderheadsupply.com/6604.html)
No doubt a nice plate but a lot of $$ for just one engine build. Would prefer to spend the money elsewhere if possible.
Thanks,
Phil

you might ask flyn ryan if he knows someone

Hi Phil
For that price you might be better off sending the motor to someone like Marc or Ryan to have it honed and shipped back to you.

Just an idea.
See you at BG

I found a local machine shop with a water jet table.
Can anyone help me out with a cad drawing of the cut out in either dwg or dxf format? My guess is a head gasket would do for a pattern.

I use AutoCad Architecture 2010. Files are in .dwg or can be .dxf.
Give me a good instruction and I can do it for you.

Phil,
Let me see if I can hustle you up a .jpg of a drawing before you start on it. Dimensions are metric.

Dwg sent.......

Jerry, would you mind sending me a copy of that drawing, too. Thanks

Yun put together this fine drawing based on a sketch I drew up from the block deck drawing Jerry provided and measuring a head gasket.
Can someone who has made one of these before look it over and let me know if I have missed anything?
Thanks,
Phil

Fine tuning the honing plate design and need some help.
Can someone experienced tell me how much larger the honing plate bore diameter should be compared to the cylinder diameter being honed?
Right now I have honing plate bore at 4.150" and liners will be sized for 4.000" pistons. I got the 4.150" dimension from measuring a head gasket which I presume is sized to fit over the ridge on top of the standard OEM liner.

Here is the finished torque honing plate Secondchance drew up and arranged for a friend of his to turn it out on a CNC machine. The machine work turned out excellent.
Thanks a million for helping out with this.
A great addition to the WAZOO ZR-1 tool crib.

Wow, that looks nice.

Hey Phil, just bolt that between the block and your heads and you will have a big cube motor the easy way. Of course the compression will be a little on the low side, but maybe you can get high dome pistons,

That stuff is car porn! It's schweeeeet Phil!

I have a Q...:o....is there a range of bore sizes that one plate will cover for an LT5? What I mean to ask can you have one plate to hone a standard liner, and then how far can you go bigger before you need to make another plate?

Sorry, does this Q make sense?:o

The diameter of the torque honing plate bore are larger than the cylinder bore.
This plate is 104.0 mm and will work on stock 99.0 mm diameter liners up to 103.5 mm (4.075") bore liners.
104 mm is just the right size to fit over the outside of the raised lip found on top of the stock and 101.6 mm (4.00") LA Sleeve type aftermarket liners. However, I plan to use it in conjunction with an OEM head gasket in place when honing the liners.

 Thanks Phil for adding to my knowledge base!

:o back in the old day's you could just hand over your 350 sbc to the machine shop with a list and come & get it when it was finished...:o

Thread resurrection....

How were the original liners honed? Did the just have a fixture to mimic the block?
