There is a guy named Tom Hetherman in Rhode Island that has a 1991 Red/Gry ZR-1. Is he going to be a part of the caravan?

I am reviving this thread....since it's already here. Or should I have moved this to the "Northeast Events" section? If the mods would prefer me doing that just tell me and I'll take this to the NE events section.:dontknow:
Anyway, Lou from Norwalk ( louispf ) and I ( Tom ) are leaving for BG that Tuesday ( 5/11/10 ) morning. We figure to stop to catch some ZZZZ's west of Charleston, WVA and then continue on Wednesday morning to check in at the U-Plaza around lunch time. Yea, I know why stop? It's bad enough to make the 13+ hr run back to the metro NYC/CT area on Sunday....I prefer not to do it twice.
At first thought our route will probably be over the TZee bridge up to Suffern to grab 78 south in NJ and go south to Carlisle and past there to western Maryland and on into West Virginia. I figure to be near Charleston, WVA about dinner time Tuesday. I figure we will hold up for the night and do the rest Wednesday. If I remember correctly, check in at the U-Plaza is 3PM, but last yr I arrived before lunch and they let me check in anyway.
Those are my thoughts on the subject. They are not written in stone. So what say ye fellow Z-drivers of the NE?:happy1:

Tom,
I am about 45 minutes west of Albany. Mapquest plotted out west to Buffalo then to Cleveland, Columbus, Louisville then BG. Where are you guys stopping (hotel, address, etc) Tuesday night so I can possibly catch up with you? I may also borrow my wife's GPS assuming it will work through the windshield tint.

John,
Last year I stopped for the night in Huntington, WV. I used exit 11 off of 64 and there was a super 8 or some other flop house right off of the exit. I'll do some more research and see if I can pin it down...maybe check my CC records and I might figure out the name as I know it was a chain deal. I seem to recall it was late afternoon, say about 5 or 6 PM. I missed an interchange and proly wasted at least an hour or a bit more. :o
I'm going to study the mapped route in fine detail as maybe we can figure an "intercept" point that could be advantageous to your route and mine. Heck, maybe if we plan well enough we might be able to intercept the WAZOO boys on their way west on Wednesday....it would be nice to try anyway?

I'll look to see if there is another route to intercept you in Huntington WV. Would you come across hit I81 in Harrisburg south to Hagerstown MD then west??

Yes John. Last yr I used 78S in NJ south to H-burg, PA and then 81S down to MD ( ?Halfway, MD ) and from there picked 70 W to get to 68W into WV and on thru to Charleston, WV and on to Huntington, WV.
Now I will meet Rick from NJ somewhere along 78S I suppose. When I figure that out and do a map quest on your start point I'll post up something. I'm thinking I will a mapquest from you to Carlisle,PA and see if that makes any sense for you to do something like that?
Tom
John, I just did a plot from Delanson, NY to Lickdale, PA.= 4.5 hrs @ 266 miles. This is a bit north of where 81 intersects with 78 just east of Harrisburgh, PA. What do you think about that as a possible meet point? Using my home as a start point it's a 3 hrs @ 168 miles to Lickdale, PA. I will do more plotting to see if I can come up with something better. Later Bro.

:hello: Doug, sorry for the Hi-Jack!:o
This is starting to look pretty darn good for a NE caravan....:occasion1
I'll throw this thought out for all of us to ponder.....Carlisle or Harrisburg(?) looks to be a natural meet point for all of us? What does everyone think?
Doug, you might be able to coordinate with John ( Delanson, NY) as he is using 81 to get to PA. This way no one travels alone? Just a thought.
Tom
Oh, btw, would anyone want to see if it would be possible to intercept the WAZOO caravan and join up for the run into BG? That might make for an impressive array of ZR-1's.

No problem with that on my end  Let me know
Gotta take the Gothels or GWB. The outer bridge puts us to far south to get to 78. My cell will be handy 516-241-1770
If I may suggest......We all should figure to stop for breakfast and all catch up with one another. We all will be on the same route any way , to be safe.
Suggestion:
There is a cracker barrel on route 78 it's at the Cabella's exit. Or anywhere else is fine with me.

Okay sooooo who died & left me at point?:sign10: Capt. Wrong-way-peachfuzz at your service!:dancing
After looking at maps till I want to go cross eyed I figure some where on 78, west of the interchange with 287, near Pluckemin, NJ???? Get off west of that interchange and try to stay at a gas stop so we can meet. I can do that map in fine detail to find a gas station we can use for a meet point or a Dunkin Donuts joint?
The only other easy meet place that comes to my mind is the Cheesequake rest stop ( ex 130?) off the GSP....but then Frank has to go south from Statan Island/VZ bridge/Gothels Br. and you have to come north from your house and me & Lou just have to keep going south. It seems like a lot of back & filling to me. What do you guys think?
Okay, all that verbosity up above not withstanding. May I ask as long as we all seem to agree that BG is a one stop run, where do we want to spend Tuesday night? Maybe we should work backwards from that point? Or do we want to try to figure a way to hook up with the WAZOO caravan??? I'm all ears.
I know this much, if Doug (Mystic, CT ) joins up with me & Lou in Norwalk my idea is to hit the TZ bridge to the GSP south via NYS Thruway. I'll do anything not to have to use the GWB & the Cross Bronx EXPWay or the Degan....those roads are in bad shape. I was just over the TZ this past weekend and the road from the Merrit Pkwy all the way to the GSP interchange off of 87N is fine...Doug are you listening? My group's route would be GSP south out of NYS down to get 95 south down to 287 west out to Pluckemin and 78 & our potential meet point.
I'm only suggesting this because Cabella's is out in Hamburg, PA. I'm not one way or the other with Frank's idea. I just thought that Hamburg was a far poke and that we could join forces a bit sooner? Soooooo what say you fellars?
All of us agree that the BG run has a stop for sleep on Tuesday evening and we get to BG Wednesday about noon? If so where do we figure to stop over for sleep? Do we want to try to hook up with the WAZOO caravan for the run into BG on Wednesday? I'm only asking because it's easier to consider all of this now, rather than to change up on the fly.
I'll meet anywhere at anytime. Just bear in mind that I got to get through the city by @ 6am. I'll wait anywhere , cell phones are a good idea.

I would like to caravan out with you guys.
What time do you guys think you will hit Harrisburg/Carlisle? I am about 5 hours north off I81 and I88. If you are going to be going through PA real early maybe I can catch up.
In looking at a map it looks like it is about a 15 hour drive (about 10 hours from Carlisle, PA). Any place to stay over in western Maryland/ eastern WVa??
Do the WAZOO guys go out the same route?
John
tomtom72
03-24-2010, 08:41 PM
Okay I guess I could give up and say we all meet at Carlsile by noon or 11 AM on Tuesday morning. This assumes that all save John & Rick get going at about 6AM.
John = 5+ hr drive
Me & Lou & maybe Doug = 4.5 hr drive from Lou's in Norwalk. Doug is an hour north of there so it 5.5(?) for him.
Frank (FU) = 4.5 hr drive
Rick NJ = 3.5 hr drive....unless he uses warp 9, then who knows.
Frank is out on long Island and has to go thru the city to get anywhere so he has to be on the go at 6AM...no choice.
If we all proceed as if we are going to gather at Carlisle or near there, I can concentrate on asking the WAZOO boys what's up with their plans and what route they are using. I looked at the map from Westminister to go west to WV and to BG and they have some back roads for a bit before they get to a good interstate....but I'm making an assumption that they would follow the same route thru WV that we would follow. I know that from Carlisle to Huntington, WV is another 6.5 hrs....so we will have to decide where we want to stop for the day. Or I can plot a course to Westminister, MD and we over night there and leave with the WAZOO boys Wednesday AM????
I will try to contact Jim from the WAZOO to learn their plans, okay? Don't shoot the messenger!

Okay guys I was looking over Jim's location ( Westminster, MD ) and it's about 11 hrs from Jim to BG.
Also from Carlisle to Jim's is a short poke of about 1.5 hrs, about 60 miles. For us that's a really short drive (relatively speaking also a short driving day) to make it our stopping point on day one. If we overnight in/or near Huntington, WV it's a 4.5 to 5 hr drive to BG.
So I looked at the mapquest routes from Westminster to BG for likely places to make a meet point.
I found obviously Charleston & Huntington WV...along the 79 / 64 corridor. Any one have an opinion they want to share? I'm all ears fellers.

Meeting in Harrisburg around noon works for me.
Harrisburg to Charleston WV is 366 miles about 6 hours
Harrisburg to Morgantown WV is 214 miles about 3 hrs 38 minutes
If we stop in Charleston overnight that would be about 11 hours of driving first day for me, leaving 5 hrs for the second day.
We could wait for Jim's group in Charleston and join him as he passes through???
Just an alternative. John

Some stats to Huntington WV from our respective start points:
John = 11.5 hrs
Doug, Lou & me = using Doug's Mystic S.P. = 12 hrs
FU ( Frank ) = used Oak Beach as a S.P. = 11 hrs
Rick = 9.5 hrs @ warp 1

Okay this is starting to take some shape. John, good work on the research for the overnight stay on Tuesday. I'm ambivalent as to where we stay the night as I stayed in a Days Inn in Huntington....like $40.00 for the bed & shower.
Frank what time do you figure that you will be on the road...I hear you about getting thru NYC before 6AM .....I'm just trying to figure if my group will catch up somewhere before Carlisle split/merge for 81 & 78 before we go towards MD & WV.
Sorry I've been absent the last few days after the rain have been bad at my job.

Tom, et al.,
I can look for a less expensive motel along the route over this weekend. I am not sure what folks budgets or preference might be for the overnight.
Let me know. If we can get a rough count on rooms maybe I can negotiate a better rate??? Of course a $40 rate sounds great!

Okay Frank....I hear you. That leaves my group and Rick to catch up to you somewhere along the way. I figure Frank's idea for Rick and my group to join up at Calbella's in Hamburg, PA looks like a good one, okay by you guys? We can make that the fail safe meet point unless my group catches up before Hamburg, okay?
Then from Hamburg we go to Carlisle and catch up with John. Sound okay so far? The only item we need to settle on is do we wait near Carlisle, on the highway near the split for 68S? Or do we pick a city like Harrisburg or something like that and pull off and wait for / or meet up with John?
Once we are all together we can decide how much farther we want to go, Charleston or where....sound reasonable to everyone?
:happy1:

I'm thinking that my group must be in the wind by 6 AM from Norwalk so we will not be too far behind you Frank. As it is we will be 2 hrs down to you from the jump. So I will get with Lou and Doug to see what they think about 6 AM from Norwalk. That makes it 5 AM for Doug from his house in Mystic and 5 AM'ish from my location in Westchester. Hopefully the LEO's will be scarce at Oh-dark-thirty!

Tom,
Let's pick a time when you guys think you will hit some place around Harrisburg. I'll leave 5 hours ahead of that time. Anyone know if there is anyway to check on highway work on I81? That would be my only hold up.
Is there an easy off/on exit with a gas station we can meet? By then we all should have to tank up? And make a pit stop. I would prefer to beat you to the meet point so as to not slow the group down.
I have a Verizon cell phone which I will PM the # to you. I can call and anyone with a Verizon cell can call each other for free.
Any further thoughts on the stop over point? Do we want to look for lower budget accomondations?
Just installed the new injectors and plan to install plenum and fill coolant tomorrow with any luck. Off to Monticello to see the grand kids Sunday. Hope to do more reseach later tomorrow night.
Thanks, John

Okay, I think Harrisburg, PA is a good spot. I'm thinking North Front Street exit and we use the Day's Inn parking lot as a meet location at 12 PM?
There are some gas stations in the neighborhood on N. Front St. also.... we can check fuel levels and proceed further west if we like or tank up which ever seems to be the most logical move for all of us. It's an easy off & on back to 81.
I think high noon at the Day's Inn would be about logical considering all our routes? It's a 4 hr trip for me & my group to H-burg from CT. It's about the same for Frank. John I think it's more like 5 hrs +/- for you, right? Rick...well he'll be there in 15 minutes!
Frank, I'll do my best to catch up with you and Rick somewhere along 78w, or at Cabella's in Hamburg, okay? I swear I'll try to shake a leg so you don't waste too much time waiting on us. Unless we all want to synchronize our departure times to Frank's? I'm not trying to be pushy, but Frank has to be in the wind by 4:30 AM to get thru NYC/metro NJ before the traffic starts. I'm just tossing this out so as a group we can make a decision. It's gonna be a long day as it is if we stick to the outline above, so I don't want to be the one to suggest it should be made longer, okay?
Okay, now overnight stop. Do we agree Charleston or Huntington WV is the end of Tuesday's drive? Do we all want to use the research John did or do we want something less costly? Majority vote takes it, okay?
John, have a safe trip Sunday! Everyone, have a good Easter! I'm out for now, gotta go swap my fuel pumps!

Any possibility of hooking up with the Caravan from New England? Nance and I are coming to BG for the 1st time, and looking forward to the experience. We're coming from York, ME, and will probably head over through Scranton, and down 81 to Harrisburg. Is your noon rendezvous still a 'go' for Tuesday?

:hello: Hi Buzz & welcome!
Sure thing on the meet up idea. We were planning Harrisburg, PA as our Tuesday meet point, say around noon....John (jrd1990zr1) is from west of Albany, NY and is using 81 as his way to PA. You guys might want to discuss a meet up point.
http://www.zr1.net/forum/showthread.php?t=11587 this thread has more of our planning with the WAZOO convoy.
Otherwise stay tuned here and I will try to keep this thread for us NE guys updated. Say, any preference on hotel/motel please post up so we can take everyone's opinions into account as we make plans.
Thanks for posting!

Buzz,
I am leaving from west of Albany and taking I-88 to I-81. It takes me about 5+ hours from my house to Harrisburg PA. How do you plan to get from Maine to I-81? Scranton to Harrisburg on I-81 is about 2 hours. Scranton to Newburgh is about 1-1/2 hr. Let me know your timing we should be able to meet up.

Buzz,
Consider meeting up with me in Mystic Ct and then to Norwalk to meet up w/Tom and Lou. We'd be leaving about 0400 from Mystic, and York's about 3 hours from here. Stay over the night before? There's lots of motels in town. or maybe$95, Mass Pike and Rt 84 to 81 and then Harrisburg might work better for you?

Any word for the meet up point for the WAZOO guys and the NE caravan?
Should us NE guys book a room at the Days Inn in Fairmont WV as the meet point? :handshak:
If the WAZOO guys leave Hagerstown at 6:00 AM should be to Fairmont around 8:30 AM to meet us. Then 7 hours to BG.
What do you guys say??? Two weeks and counting.
I'd like to make my reservation if this is the meet up point???
Thanks, John
Fairmont as a meeting point and Huntington WV for bed down. From Huntington WV to BG 4.5 hours to BG.
Good Tom , Ricky ?We will meet up earlier.

I plan to meet you guys in Harrisburg at noon on Tuesday. I'm traveling from the north.
Was thinking we should bed down in Fairmont on Tuesday evening Hagerstown to Fairmont is 2.5 hours so WAZOO would catch us at 8:30 AM. If we bed down in Huntington, we have to wait 5 hours or 11:00 AM for the WAZOO bunch to catch us. Do we want to hang around for them to catch us or go ahead of them????
What's the group's preference???

Okay, sorry for my absence John, Frank, Rick & Doug. Lou knows where I've been....trying to fix his car:mrgreen:
I say we all vote on where to stop on Tuesday, Fairmont or Huntington.
Also, we need to consider what John and Frank have said about travel times on Wednesday. If we want to link up with the WAZOO boys then we need to think where we want to break for the day on Tuesday so we intercept them on Wednesday.
Fairmont = about 7 hrs to BG. WAZOO catches us in about 2.5 hrs @ about 8:30 AM Wednesday.
Huntington = about 4.5 hours to BG. WAZOO catches us in about 5 hrs @ about 11 AM Wednesday.
I'll call Lou and Doug tonight to get their thoughts and post back. I don't have a preference one way or the other, soooo you guys decide.
Huntington for me. Fairmont won't be good. I have to pick up some one in Nashville on Wednesday afternoon.

Lou,
Apologies for not getting back to you last weekend. Fairmont sounds good to me! What motel? Travelocity has several listed and a few aren't too bad $wise. Should we make a reservation or just wing it? Chatted w/Tom last nite for an hour or so, he's already thinking about packing his bag and throwing it in the car!. Looks like we'll leave your place @0600, I'll need directions to get there. Is there anyway to find out if there's any road construction along our route? If this all pans out, we should have a pretty impressive group arriving @ BG at the same time! NO BUMP DRAFTING!!!!!!!!

I'll PM Darin from the WAZOO and find out what their plans are.
