I'm going put it in a big ziplock bag but is it ok to coat it with Mobil 1 oil prior to putting in the bag or would it be better to put rear end fluid on it.
I'm thinking its fine either way. I just want to protect in case the bag gets a hole etc.

how about wheel bearing grease? when taken from storage it could be washed clean with gas. been doing that to crankshafts for years.

 Nice!
Maybe I'll get 5 miles per gallon more while it sits on my shelf too!
Wheel bearing grease sounds fine but messy and hard to get in all the crevices etc.

this is just the ring and pinion gears , or a housing with gears ?
I wash mine (gears ) clean, then paint it with spray paint (krylon ). the paint stops any rust. When it comes times to use them, wash with lacquer (washes paint right off).

Just two more cents from left field.....CRC used to make a lube / moisture barrier spray. It would dry to an air tight film. We used to use it or BoeShield T9 at the boat yard for winter lay-up protection of any exposed metals including electrical connections & cylinder bores.
Check at he local marine supply store if it is still on the market. One of it's advantages was that on moving parts no cleaning was needed prior to being put back in service.
