View Full Version : Project floor & tunnel heat and sound insulation barrier

I just thought I would share this for someone else that might be considering more heat/sound insulation on the exterior. While under the Z and detailing/making the plan for battery relocation, etc. I figured I would consider more sound and heat insulation while the motor and trans is out. I already insulated the interior prior to new carpet install so I researched and considered many options. Finally I came across this site and decided to order this product and Jason is still honoring the prices from last year:

http://www.motownmuscle.com/forums/showthread.php?t=90357

http://coolandquiet.com/products_detail.cfm?PID=4

I'll start making patterns this weekend and post the pics after install and eventually rate the product difference when I eventually get it back on the road. I am only going to get 1 sheet and from the measurements I took will be more than enough for the inside of the tunnel all the way back from above the bellhousing back to the rear storage. Since I am relocating the battery I will also insulate the storage box on the outside with the excess.

Carter,

Thanks, just doing what I can to make it better (another while I'm in there, sure do have a lot of those). I hope the heat works more than the sound insulation. Well........I do have B&B tri-flow with headers and no cats. I hope you had a wonderful XMas even though you could not have dinner with my "HOMEBOY".

Craig, my guess is the cool and quite will make a heck of a difference. If the weather cooperates next month when you are out this way you can see first hand how doing "a little" can make "a considerable" difference. Good luck with the project.

I sure do hope so and willing to experiment to find out. Yes, I am worried about the weather next month and hope all will be fine. Can't wait to meet you folks and see some of the D.C. area.

Let us know how well it works for you

I will definitely post my findings and keep you folks informed.

Tom,

I guess that is what it should be called at this point. I had no intention of doing all of this, but since I am constantly waiting for something to come in or to find an item on the Z, just keeping busy basically doing a frame on restoration. I don't know about being the "man", but just trying to share info if useful to someone else since I try to research stuff before I do it.

Thanks for your positive comments! :handshak: Wait till you see what the differential looks like............. :happy1:

There isn't anything more frustrating than standing around waiting for parts to arrive, or looking for parts so you can get what you need to carry on working.

I do believe that's a contributing factor to our "while we're here" rule!:sign10:

The rear gear huh? I'll bet I will see another ZR-1 where the ants will need sun glasses as they pass under the car!

When she is dunn, I know that this will be another really sweeeeeet Z!:jawdrop:

Tom,

Now I have to wait several more months to just get camshaft sprocket bolts:mad:. Yes, sometimes the Z can be very frustrating. I also wonder sometimes why I do what I do where it can't be see except by the ants.:dontknow: Thanks for all your comments and I know it won't be like Ricky's, but I think I'll be very happy in the long run.

Okay, so everyone already knows how anal I am and how I like to experiment. So I finally get around to put on some of this insulation since I posted this last year. I have down time waiting on the heads, etc. to complete the LT5 so here goes...............

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j86/hawaiizr1/DSC02365-1.jpg

So I had this awesome material laying around for months in my way and moving it around the garage causing more dings, etc. on it and figured I better install it and get it out of the way.

I finally get around to starting a pattern after trying to figure out how I want to do this and what options I have for the shape of the floor tunnel. Using a marker to make the pattern and some tin snips, I proceed to cut out a piece.

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j86/hawaiizr1/DSC02367.jpg

This is some high quality stuff and not that easy to work with since it is a little stiff, but that is what makes it good and I think it will do what I want it to as far as sound and insulation goes.

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j86/hawaiizr1/DSC02368.jpg

Initally the plan was to make it like a u shape in the tunnel and it looked like a good idea at the time to make it cleaner. But that did not work once I found that was too sharp a turn for the liking of the material at the far back end so I trimmed it to fit as shown.

I cleaned the surface really well with lacquer thinner and placed it on the body. It sticks very well so you have to line it up good before placing it on.

I'm still very happy with the results and will do some fine trimming with a razor.

The plan is to join pieces together with aluminum heat tape to finish it off. All I could do on this initial test piece was to rub it with my hands to smooth out for now. I will go to Home Depot on my way home from work tomorrow and get a roller or something that would be used on vinyl flooring or something. Once I use the roller on it it should be nice and smooth with just the diamond finish.

I would have like a better fit on the back edge and trimmed angle but I had the piece screwed up from the start.

Anyway, my opinion on this product is it is awesome and I think it will stick pretty permanently as I tried pulling up on the edge and it does not want to give.

I can see this is going to be a little time consuming making the right patterns and fitting this. I'll take photos and document until the completed project. With the insulation I did under the carpet and this, I would imagine I am going to end up with a cooler and quieter Z. Maybe I won't even hear any drone from the B & B............yeah, right!!

I am glad it worked out for you. There is an article somewhere about how
this product was tested and basically they put it on the bottom of semi
trailers for a year. After 1 million miles drive it was still sticking fine.
Something like that. They had zero failures. It is pretty good stuff. I
will post up on that fourm also. Let me know if you need more.
Thanks,

Okay folks, here is an update with photos.

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j86/hawaiizr1/DSC02385.jpg

I am not finished yet, but working on this very slowly and it is much more difficult than I initially thought. I guess the right description would be time consuming to try to make patterns that go with the shape as much as possible.

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j86/hawaiizr1/DSC02384.jpg

I have no idea how much this will help if any with noise and heat, but in theory it should be of benefit.

I am down to the last pieces and gave up for today.

Have a Happy 4th!!! fahne

Lookin' gooood Craig! Betcha can hardly wait to put 'er on the road - I know cuz mine has been down about the same amount of time too!

I promised Ami I would install the new carpet in her C3 vert, and then put the motor back into the Z (Oh, yeah...got 'er back last week. W/ any luck it will be at least sitting in the car on Monday, barring any unforeseen issues (like..."WTF! I know I put those bolts somewhere!"...<THAT kind of stuff:rolleyes:

Paul,

Thanks for the comments. Yes, I know what you mean and its been a year now. I did not anticipate it taking so long.

Sounds great on your end and I can't wait until I at least get to the point of putting the motor back into the Z. Yeah, I have a few issues about where I put things already and "how does this go back in now?"

Happy 4th too.

Other than a few little hiccups with my measurements, I am pleased with the end results.

It would have helped if I paid attention in geometry class instead of chasing skirts back in the day, but what fun would that have been.

Thanks for the comment Ryan. You know, I did not weigh the 42" X 48" sheet before I started hacking at it and wondering what the weight was as I am trying to keep track of what I took off and what I added for my own use. With the box and all the shipping shows 5 lbs so I'll guess half of that. I didn't eat any hot dogs or hamburgers on this 4th of July so maybe it balances out..................:-D.

Hey Tom,

Thanks for the comments and I'm sure others will disagree. As long as it functions as I hope then I'm happy. I think I added about 4 lbs to my car though. I am still looking for a rubber roller to smooth it out more.

Thanks Jeff, Scott and David. I don't know why I have this thing about experimenting sometimes. I did the undercarpet insulation before I had it running last year and definitely felt the difference there too. I can't wait to get the motor done and just enjoy the Z for once; it seems to have been the story of my life with the Z. I know it will all be worth in the end and I will be loving the experience of the ZR-1 like all of you. :dancing

4#? Sheeiiiitttt...I know where I can take off at least 40#...from the freakin' drivers belly, for starters!!

I guess that's why Pete's car is so fast. He doesn't have a belly and drives naked (HE said that once...not me. OH! Correction...He did say he wears socks (and that helmet, of course).

Craig, I recon you don't have much to take off around your middle either. But, I wouldn't worry any about the 4#. It is prolly well worth it, and I'll follow suit when I get past the rest of this. I'm going thru serious Z withdrawls, and I need the speed, right now! :dancing

Beautiful job, btw!! Really nice work!

Hey Paul,

I guess the average ZR-1 owner might have 50-100# on me so I'll be okay I guess since I loss the heavy acid battery and spare tire. I'm lucky that I'm lightweight and can afford to add weight to my Z without thinking twice. I even fit nicely into 90 MY seats. Probably only Marc H weighs less than me. I don't know though after retirement in the next few month since the Army won't be running me like Forrest Gump daily at o' dark thirty every morning.

I do have six new camshaft sprocket bolts from Marc you can have since it will prolly be longer than "several more months" for me :D

If you decide you want the six camshaft bolts, just message me an address and I will get them in UPS to ya tomorrow or whenever you need them

We can figure out how I can get six replacement camshaft bolts later proud

Cliff,

Thanks for your offer and I ordered another set just in case. I also found another source with several hundred of the original bolts; I have to find out if he only sells them to his customers or not before I spread the word.

You are the kind of guy that gives the shirt off you back and I cannot thank you enough to even think of making the sacrifice.

I'll surely have to buy you a Primo "Hawaiian" Beer or two when you visit the islands.

Hey Ryan,

Believe it or not, the heads are on their way and in CA right now. I use a shipping service to Hawaii to save on certain items like these heads. I have the rest of the items following behind and hope not too long. It will give me time to install and degree in the Stage I cams from SGC that are on its way too. I did not know about you at the time doing this kind of work and I know you know your stuff as well as a few others here. Looking at your photos of your shop and toys it speaks for itself. Yes, I am ready to get running as it has been a long time........a little over a year and I might have to move in a few months so I have a time crunch.

A few of us down here in the US of A have had our Zs on jack stands or Kwiklift for about a year. That has its positive aspects....we just keep modifying untill we get all of our parts.

I think it all has something to do with Canadian weather also ;)

Cliff,

I'm tired of looking at my Z on jack stands:cry:. The good thing is I'm semi-retired and outprocessing etc. so I'll have full-time effort going now and should get er done by the end of August at the latest.........my hope:confused:

The local Corvette Club has Corvettes in Paradise where all the Vettes are lined up on the lawn of the Honolulu Zoo in Waikiki. I have never participated to date and I want to take home a trophy my first time out:

http://www.corvetteclubofhawaii.com/CIP%20Concours.html

I have to make you, Carter, Ricky and Keith proud...............as well as "Represent" for the Z community if you know what I mean. I have the only Z in the club and jaws drop when the clamshell is opened.

HAWAIIZR-1

I think most of us here do not know what all you did to your LT5 that would not necessarily show up looking under the clamshell.

We did not see those pictures when you were on your sabbatical ;) and we kind of lost some pictures of one of the most informative threads we have going involving engine tear down http://www.zr1.net/forum/showthread.php?t=9180

If only the "gang" really knew what you accomplished rebuilding your LT5 :notworthy

Cliff,

Thanks for your thoughts and praise, but not sure I am worthy. As you know I am just an amateur experimenting and could possibly be causing a disaster for all I know. It was very time consuming and I did not think what I was sharing was worth much at the time. Unfortunately the folks that do know a lot don't post info so I try to just share the things that I feel could benefit someone, but did not think I have enough experience or knowledge to share engine building tips. I am documenting everything as I go along for my own history and would like to make a personal build book. If everything turns out well and the motor holds up at 7K rpm runs on the dyno with good HP/torque then I guess I'll post some things learned during this build. Right now all is speculation to me. If I can degree the cams it will be a miracle to me so wish me luck. All the stuff is on its way and went with the Moroso pro 18" degree wheel we spoke about.

Take care and thanks again,

Craig

I think the fact that you guys are faster has something to do with Canadian weather also ;)On the outside while that might make some sense....For me personally, I just don't like jobs staring me in the face for 6 months. If I have a porting job for say 1? months, thats a longggg time, for me. Take care guys....
