View Full Version : My Most Excellent Z06 Wheel Adventure

I sold and delivered my chrome ZR-1 5 spokes to a CF member in RI. Unfortunately, he has them back on the market. Turns out the offset is wrong for his C4. I only found out after I had delivered the wheels to him. Back here in Chicagoland, I cleared the snow/ice from the driveway and then decided to remove the wheel studs. I received the 18mm hub/wheel centric spacers from wheeladapters.com. Also bought a set of
GM racing wheel studs to put on.
Funny thing though, I never realized that the rear rotors has 10 stud holes until I looked at it today. OK, not too much of an issue but I also saw today that the WHEEL HUB also has 10 holes. What kind of Corvette wheel hub would be made with 10 holes (different patterns) or why would you drill additional stud holes except for non-GM wheels?!
So the question is "Am I facing installing new rear hub bearings?". Been there before so I now what it takes.
Discuss. :blahblah:

"If it ain't broke don't fix it" a wise man once said. If your rear bearings are good, you can replace the studs and mount your wheels, your good to go, leave well enough alone.

10 holes, are you sure you're hubs/rotors are stock?
My '90 (although a little rusty) only has 5.

Tom,

The rear rotors are not stock. They're aftermarket slotted and drilled so more of a universal fit. What I didn't expect to find was a hub flange with more than 5 holes. But =Jeff= has shown me an illustration of an OEM hub bearing with 8 holes. I'll have pics tomorrow.

No indication of manuf. for rotors. Came with the car.
No cracking tho. Holes all chamfered. The hubs look like OEM
being sold today. Why the extra holes isn't clear because they aren't meant to hold wheel studs. I'll be grinding down new stud heads tonight for install tomorrow. Wheels/tires should be here Wednesday.

Hans,

Spacers were separate. I got studs from GM. I believe they are about 2.75" racing studs.

Yep. That's what I paid for them at local Chevy dealer. And now I bought lug nuts. He also had a wheel lock set that he sold me for wholesale. 16 lug nut and 4 lock nuts + key = $55.00. I'll post pics of everything later.
Just came back from picking up wheel stud tool at Pete's.

First pics hot off the iPhone.

Just a couple of notes:

I took the car down the driveway and down the block slowly to let everything seat. No rubbing noises although rear brake line is up against hub. Will need to tie wrap for now. EBrake clears by about 3/8".

The 18mm spacer is right on the edge of being too much. If I am not happy, may try a 16mm. This confirms the measurement I did with the previous wheels of 5/8" difference between complete Z06 wheel offset and the ZR-1 5 spoke.

I did get the wheels re-balanced before putting them on.

Also pretty sure I'll need an alignment.

FYI, if you are in the market for new rear rotors to replace your swiss cheese ones, I'd have to suggest Baer's 13" upgrade. It's not much more than the cost of 2-piece rotors alone, and it would really help fill in those rears. Those wheels make your rear brakes look puny. Are they 18/19's?

Hans,

They are OEM Speedlines. I was surprised by how light they felt even with the tire. And those are GY F1 Supercars.
These are 18x9.5/19x12.

How did you tie wrap the rear brake lines? I need to do that for ever so slight clearance.

Ccmano
12-16-2009, 10:39 PM
One zip tie loosely around the top of the shock, a second zip tie around both the brake line and the first zip tie. I adjusted it with the wheel mounted and off the ground so that the line is about one inch (or less) away from the wheel. I found that when the car was back on the ground it was still away from the wheel. Good luck.

One final detail. I bought the plastic caps to cover the lugs. All was fine except for the 2 rear wheel locks. The wheel locks do not have outer thread as far up the regular lug. That means that the longer racing studs I installed interfere with the plastic cap. I'm thinking of drilling a small hole at the top of the plastic cap allowing the stud to poke thru the cap and allowing thread to engage.

Had the opportunity to finish the final details. I drilled out the center of the plastic caps so the tip of the wheel stud no longer interferes. I can paint that wheel stud tip silver to blend it further with the cap.
As for the brake lines, it didn't take much for clearance. I used long tie wraps around a hard brake line. Plenty of clearance for now. Unfortunately we've got snow on the ground and more on the way thru Xmas. Test drive will need to wait for now.:redface:

It was 35 and sunny here in Chicagoland. Take that you SoCal guys.:bootyshak
Roads looked pretty good although there was some thawing runoff in places but no real big. Decided to finally take the car out for a run to see if I felt anything diff about the 18/19 Z06 wheels and the F1 Supercars.
Some general impressions on cold asphalt:

Car drove straight and it likes the cold dry air. No vibes. Based on a few off/on ramps and some curves I am very familiar with, I could feel the car as being more responsive to steering input. It was immediate. In comparison, the previous wheel/tire combo felt like there was a slight delay. In off/on ramps, the rear felt very planted. Previously, the rear would feel as if it was dancing around a bit. The front usually would feel like it was pushing into a curve. Today, it felt like a controllable oversteer. The front tucked in nicely.

Also, given the diff in diameter for the 19" wheel tire combo, I decided to see how much of a speedo error I would have. I used my GPS which provides road speed readout. Overall, speed differential was 2.5-4mph with speedo reading slower. At speedo indicated 80mph cruise, GPS showed 83-84mph. Not sure if that's enough to warrant a speedo gear change. One note, I do not have a benchmark for the speedo v GPS using the standard tire/wheel combo. For all I know it could have been the same differential. Anybody else with similar experience?
