View Full Version : TPMS sensor compatability

Does anyone know if there are any modern tire pressure sensors, the ones that mount to the stem inside the wheel, that are compatable with the early systems we have in our cars?
To my knowledge there are currently 3 or 4 different oem suppliers that provide systems. Seems that would be preferable to the clunky sensors that many of us have removed because we don't trust them to come apart at speed. It would still be nice to have that system working.

I don't know of any, but if we had any schematics for the OEM sensors I bet something could be built to fit inside the newer style sensors
I would much prefer to have TPMS sensors working, but I don't like the band attachment and my OEM sensors didn't fit on 18" wheels. The valve stem style like the ones on my Escalade (and many other makes I'm sure) would be great. Wish they could be adapted to our display panel.

again, I think the electronics in our OEM form could be redoen adn packaged in a Valve stem sensor.. but at this point it would be a reverse engineering..
Maybe I will take the one sensor I have apart and look at the internals

To my knowledge both our old ones and the new ones operate on radio frequency. It might just be as simple as knowing our frequency ranges and tuning the new ones accordingly. But then Jeff, you would certainly know allot more than I on that subject. Once we know the frequencies maybe Lee can get them made in China for a buck apiece.

Looking at new AFS rims. What to do about TPMS?
Anything new on this front?

You need to look harder Steve... its all over pages 22-24 of that thread.
Here is a video of my custom TPMS in action - demonstrating a low pressure alarm.

I don't want to rebuild the whole car Robert, just find a compatible TPMS.

Roberts stuff still doesn't account for the sending unit in the wheel.

There are a couple newer iTPMS systems that can use the external stem/cap style "BT" transmitting OR the internal "stem-type" BT transmitting that report pressure, temperature and location to either I-devices or Android devices. There's maybe as many as 3- 4 and the searches using iTPMS leaves some things to be desired. All of them deserve maybe a look. Some of them will also do OBD2 functions through the same BT display. When I mention "stem-type" I mean the OE type GM/CMC and others have used most recently '00+.
The Orange system was originally an Ohio based company I believe and was then purchased by the current "other shore" developer and there's still some of the earlier product out there as well as the newer. I believe a person needs to be careful with the Orange product - choice of early/late seems to be important OR I know it used to be. I've mentioned the Orange product myself years ago as being a "choice". I still believe if I were to consider anything for newer wheel/tire combinations, Orange might be the first choice. Maybe?

The Orange kit I used has the modern sensor on stem sending unit, yes you would need to dismount the tire to access but battery life is supposed to be like 6-7 years. Some kits have a valve stem cap sensor/battery that is accessible but you're gonna be changing batteries on that far more often due to size. I don't think you're going to have any luck finding a modern sensor adapted to the old factory idiot light - besides you get a lot more functionality out of a full aftermarket kit. Mine shows the exact pressure and temperature of each tire, the OEM system just turned on a light when any of the four tires showed a low pressure condition.
My set-up is a bit of a project but it's something any do-it-yourselfer with a dremel tool can do in a few hours. My custom screen is on file at the print shop so if anyone wants one I can have more made up.
