View Full Version : How to remove throttle cables?

The Helm's manual totally glosses over this saying "remove" them from the throttle body. But since I seem to be a dope, and since the lever part seems to be plastic, it seems better I ask a dumb question than snap off the plastic and ruin the throttle body. How do you get the little metal cylinders at the end of the cables out of the plastic levers/pulleys? Thanks!

Two ways to do it.

Manually open the blades, jab the handle end of a screwdriver into the ports to hold the blades open. Then remove the cables.

Manually open blades, use screwdriver to jam the throttle linkages open and hurridly pull the cables out before the screwdriver comes out and your fingers get snapped.

Also once you get the cable tips off, there is a retaining tab on the black mount where they slide through. You need to push from the front side a small piece of plastic, then it slides over.

I'll host a photo in a couple of hours when i get home.

Here is a shot from the rear of the TB. You can get to the locking part directly from the front.

Thanks Jeff! I need to get a new gasket first, as I'm sure I won't be able to reuse mine. Then I'll see if I can't fix this idle issue with the secondaries. :)

Bob, I have the "gasket" kit from GM, it has both big gaskets, coolant plate gasket and the o-ring for the IAC. It's 30.00 and I can send it with the vacuum tube if you wish. You can send me another check later.

Dennis, not sure what happened to the original shots, as there are not even any properties for the pics in the post.

Shot from the back showing the hole for the retainer. I use a pick or just the T-15 bit to poke it out.

It's pretty much common sense. Like Jeff said just turn the throttle spindle to the open position and if your quick and can pop the cables or cable out of the slot your hand won't be in pain.

It sounds like you just need to disconnect the cables.
And if you want a gasket right now and you like doing things the hard way "like me" then you can pay $3.00 for a sheet of Felpro gasket and trace out and cut your own throttle body gasket.
