Is the liner installation and retainer kit a must to install liners?

Is the J 37330 Kent-Moore tool absolutely necessary to install new liners or is there a work around that folks use?

I used the grey pvc pieces of pipe with the head bolts to securely hold the liners bottomed out. The pvc would just catch the step in the liner and there was still enough room to install the pistons. If not held securely the liners might move and disturb the curing of the sealant.

Thanks for the tip. I thought so by looking at pictures of the pieces and see they sell for about $230 on one site for 5 pieces. So basically some evenly cut piece of pvc and flat washers with the head bolts?

You got it. Just remember to space the washers off center so their is clearance to get the pistons in later, like I didn't think about, so it took more time to reposition them and retighten later. If I remember right, the pvc was big enough to catch the step on the liner and the adjacent edge of the block to hold it level. They might of been like an inch in dia.

It should be six pieces. Three per side. Bolts with a proper cut washer will do the trick.

It should be six pieces. Three per side. Bolts with a proper cut washer will do the trick.

Thanks Jeff, I don't know where I got 5 pieces from.....sounds like a plan to make them.
