I took my differential down today to inspect and clean. I had alot of red silicone in it, over squeeze and loose particles and I didnt know if that should be a concern or not. Do you guys have any suggestions or mods that could be done. I am happy with the gear ratio. So far I am just going to change the seals but any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

I just got done removing my differential for a gear change, and the red silicone everywhere is the norm, not a whole lot of care went into putting that stuff on from the factory. Here's a pic of mine when I got it apart.

Wow, I am dropping mine today too and I am sure mine will look like this too. I am doing a total rebuild with 4:10s and the only other mod I will be doing is using the studs instead of bolts for the caps.

I have a question. Why bother going through the trouble of machining the bearing caps so that the cover provides some support and then goop it all up with silicone. Since there is silicone on the caps the cover cant be supporting them. Would it be better if we used something like the sealant on the cam covers?

Were did you get your studs? I was also looking at machining the case so I could use the bottom bolt as a drain plug. I was also thinking about drilling and taping the stand offs on the batwing and place some allen screws to preload to supply more support.

Hi Dave,
I'm at work so I'll get back to you tonight Hawaii time with the info. It was provided to me on this site and one of the members that helped me out might chime in before I get the info; you might find it with search. They were from ARP but I'll get the part number, etc. I am going to dry to drill my out for the drain plug tonight and bought one of those kits with the bit, tap and plug, etc. from one of the Corvette catalogs. I'll try to get you that info too. Sorry, I don't know anything else about more support for our diffs.

I pulled my diff apart yesterday and examined the clutches. I was wondering if they look excessively worn also were is a good place to order new ones. I examined the gears and couldn’t find any sighs of cracking or damaged. Any imput would be greatly appreciated.

I also modified my bottom cover bolt to use it as a drain plug. I havent seen anyone else do it, I didnt feel comfortable drilling a regular drain plug and this was less intrusive.

I'm having my gears done as we speak. My disks didn't look quite as worn as yours, but I chose to replace mine anyway. You can pick up a clutch pack set for about $65.00. Cheap insurance as long as you have it apart. Just my two cents.
I got mine from flea bay:

Interesting approach to the drain plug, never seen that.

Pretty slick idea you have there; I think you are right and less likely to affect strenth of the case. I guess I might want do the clutch pack too while I'm at it. Thanks for the idea.

Is the GM service manual for a zr1 different than a regular 91 vette?? I see the Lt5 supplement all over ebay and no ZR1 manuals.

There is no ZR-1 model specific service manual that I know of. Most topics are addressed for both standard and ZR-1 models in the regular GM service manual. The LT5 supplement addresses the LT5 specifically.

Dave, I use a sealant called "The Right Stuff". Use it on LT1 intakes and LS1 stuff and have never had an issue with it.

Dave,
I ordered this kit, not sure if it's the GM equivilant or not, but RTV sealer should take care of it. Are you using a gasket?

Thank you Jeffvette, I use that on the T56 tranny I’ve rebuilt. Its good stuff. I was concerned due to the structural aspect and flexing of the structure that plain silicon wouldn’t due the job.

Rich,
Can you confirm the part number you have is Spicer 706352X? Danelle from the link you provided said that is the part number they sell on the listing, but a friend of mine said the part number for our D44-HD is Spicer 707018X as shown here that this is what was used to rebuild his D44 in C4:
http://www.diffsonly.com/catalog/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=707018X&osCsid=fdafcc983f5c6258a64b8a8e280f8a13&x=3&y=10
Based on this site from Dana/Spicer, I think 706352X is for Dana 44 solid axle:
http://www2.dana.com/expertforms/depart.aspx
Putting in the two part numbers and click on where used and then the drawing as you will see the GM and Jeep application with our rear.
Thanks,

Rich,
Okay, good news and it should work then. The gal from the site you ordered (Danelle) said it is interchangeable and a marketing scheme from Dana. I ordered the 707018X from here:

So my rebuild kit came with a gasket and I noticed the factory does not use one based on mine and all the photos I see. When I reassemble, don't use the gasket that came with the kit and just use sealer?
Thanks!

I was just down at NAPA and saw the "Right Stuff" Jeff talked about. It was in the sealant section with the RTV and anti-seize. Hope that makes it easy for anyone looking.
